09.07.2019 Meeting #439- Cherishing Our Friends

The 09th of July was a memorable night as it marked the very first meeting of the Term 2019/2020 with our oldest member as our newest President. Alongside our club’s motto “Friends Helping Friends Succeed” our theme of the meeting was “Cherishing Our Friends” with the word of the day being “Relationship”.

The ambience of the room was filled with delight and excitement as the new EXCO and members prepared well for this first and auspicious meeting. Our newest member Jocelyn, took the stage at sharp 7.15 to call the meeting to order and led us well through the Toastmasters’ Promise and gracefully passed the stage on to our new President, K L Loh, ATMG.

K L Loh, ATMG was full of zest and zeal and he jumped, clapped, and yelped during his lively first Presidential address. He cheered on all the past presidents, he introduced each and every one in his team of EXCO and he reiterated the glory of the club and the importance of Toastmasters. Flabbergasted!!!
The members and guests were given a quick opportunity to speak about the theme of the day and it was great as we reminisced out motto “Friends Helping Friends Succeed” and how much we really love Toastmasters and each other.

In this first ever meeting we had a double kill session with two amazing DTMs. We had both an Invocation Speech by C P Lau, DTM and a Humour Session by Ken Chan, DTM. C P Lau, DTM never fails to lift our spirits while Ken Chan, DTM never fails to spray some laughing gas in the air. With that, the tone and mood was set as the stage was handed over to our lovely lady, Area C1 Director and authentic member of Money Mastery-KL, Julia Leong, ACS, ALB who played the role as Toastmaster of the Evening.

Julia Leong, ACS, ALB, just like our President was full of vigour as she brought us through the history of the club and Toastmasters. She then introduced each of the role players. Today Phang Chew Yee, CC was the Ah-Counter, Chitirra was the Grammarian and C S Ong was the Timer. As General Evaluator we had the District Table Topics™ Champion, Robert Ram, DTM.

We then moved on to the fun and exciting impromptu speaking session called Table Topics™ by our Table Topics™ Master of the day, Ron Yeap, ACB, CL. He had with him an array of interesting topics on which members Vijaykumar, CC, and KT Chok, PM4 and guests Elysia, DTM and Guest Yazen attempted them and did great.

It was time to move on to the Assigned Speech Session where we had 4 speakers on the trail today. First up, we had Ken Chan, DTM doing the 2-2-2. His second path, second level, and second project on Understanding Your Leadership Style with his speech title “Different Stroke, Different Folks”. He highlighted the various leadership styles that exist and how each may differ or be applied to various individuals. His evaluator was Hj. Hashim, DTM who was bubbly and strong on his evaluation.

Next up, we had our Vice President of Membership, Abdulrahman, PM1 embark on the second project of his second level under Presentation Mastery. He was to do a speech on Effective Body Language with his title The Power of the Triple P Theory, The Rule of Success. He explained his life as a kid till he went on to work and how he became successful at where he is now through the power of “People Pushing People” to do something and motivate others to success. Rajendra was his evaluator who was also working on his Level 1 Project 2.3 on how to give an evaluation. He did well for his first ever evaluation.

Our 3rd speaker was none other than Olivia Chen, PM1 who returned to complete her Level 2 under Presentation Mastery. Under the Introduction to Toastmasters Mentoring with the title “The Torch Light”, she spoke about how her mentor nurtured her to be a better speaker and highlighted the differences between a mentor and a coach. She was evaluated by C P Lau, DTM who gave her his positive feedback on her topic.
Last but not least we had Ron Yeap, ACB, CL do another speech from his Advanced Communication Manual with the title “The Waterfall That I Fall Into” whereby he shared his personal story on how he nearly escaped death at a waterfall retreat he went to. With that he concluded that in life you don’t always get second chances. He was evaluated by our young and upcoming Evaluation Queen, Rey Thean, PM1 who gave her witty evaluation.

We headed for a short break after an overwhelming but enjoyable Project Speech Session. After that we went on for the learning session which was the Evaluations session. General Evaluator, Robert Ram, DTM took on the stage with might and energy and called upon the respective evaluators as mentioned above to do their evaluations. Before the Project Speech Evaluations, he invited Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB to first give his Table Topics™ Evaluation. Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB was humble and articulate in his evaluation as always which inspires the speakers to return as their better selves.

We had a quick round of Open Evaluation which is our club’s usual practice to enable all to provide their fair share of feedback. After that we had the respective role players read out their technical reports followed by the General Evaluator giving his best feedback for the betterment of the club. He was truly a ball of energy.
The floor was passed back to the beautiful Toastmaster of the Evening, Julia Leong, ACS, ALB who helped the President read out the names of tonight’s champions as follows:

Best Table Topics™: KT Chok, PM4

Best Project Speech: Ron Yeap, ACB, CL

Best Evaluation: Hj. Hashim, DTM

K L Loh, ATMG took on the stage to give his closing address with a bang. He invited the guests to give their feedback, congratulated our first time role players of the night who were Jocelyn as the ASAA, CS Ong as the Timer and Rajendra as the Evaluator. He gave his power packed closing address which made us want to return for sure for the next exciting meeting. Truly he has a way of knitting the relationship between the members with his sincere love and liveliness.

The meeting was adjourned with a group photo but that was not it as we gathered for a cake cutting session for our July babies Julia, Rey & Chew Yee. A simple act that can create a big impact on our relationship as a Toastmaster family from one of the best clubs in town. Truly we are Money Mastery-KL Toastmasters where we cherish friends as family. Love Always!
