Club's Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contests on 23 July 2013

23rd of July was the club's 2013/ 2014 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contests. It was an exciting contest to the club as the contestants were bold and brave. Some of the contestants participated to test their humor talents, some of them want to explore or test out their evaluation skills. The greatest gift that I had received as an organizer was the volunteering members and I was deeply touched by their support in making this contest a successful event.

The setting of the event was started as early as 5:30pm and with the assistance from TARC Toastmasters besides our members. Just as we had finished the setting, Mathew brought us the refreshment. At 6:45pm, the chief judge, Chun Ming, CC, ALB briefed the role players while I gave my briefing to the contestants. There were 6 secretive  judges whom were invited by the chief judge.

The contest began with the house rules explanation and followed the club president’s opening address. I took 7-8 minutes to read out the house rules to the contestants as well as to the audience. Our 1st contestant A. Mahadevan shared with us his experienced in UK that he was recognized as a Chinese. 2nd Contestant Victor Wan shared with us on how he learned from the spam mail like offering Viagra online or hacked mail to ask for money through his contact. Kelvin Chong, on the other hand, expressed his life after marriage and he concluded that life is like a TV, if it is without color, then the life is always in black and white. 4th Contestant, Alwin Chuah humorously shared that he had his terrible buttock pain when he could not pronounce the English correctly when he was young and Mathew Philippose told us that by going though pain he learned something just like his experience in cycling.
The Humorous Contest finally ended with joy and laughter before a short break of 10 minutes.

We had 8 members participated the Evaluation Contest. The Evaluation Contest began with the test speaker, Gerald Lee’s speech- “A Leap of Faith”. He had a very good title that pondered all to listen carefully on his speech. He expressed his presentation with confident by speaking his clear, loud voice and followed by his body language. All the contestants listened to the speech and made notes for their evaluations. After the Gerald’s speech, all the contestants were escorted to the room for their evaluation speech preparation and the contestants were called to give their speech points one-by-one.

To me, as a learner, it was the best moment and time to learn different evaluation styles from different contestants. Indeed, it was the fastest way to grow my evaluation skill.

After the Evaluation Contest, we continued with the award presentation. All the role players were given the certificates and tokens of appreciation before the contest results were announced. It was the shimmering moment and the results were as below:
