Meeting #381 - Teacher’s day

Wow, today we had quite a big group with 20 attendees. Surprisingly 8 out of them were non-Toastmaster guests. The good news was that few of them were interested to join our club!
Don’t be confused, Teacher’s Day actually falls on 16th May, not today (23rd May).

We started the meeting late at 7.27 pm. Mainly due to the absence of a few role players, also a speaker. We were also a bit involved to welcome new faces who reached a bit late. We should plan well of the timing from upcoming meetings.
Manish Jha, CC, who at the last minute took the role of SAA, called the meeting to order and passed the floor to the Competent Communicator President Ron Yeap.
Every one of us were requested to introduce ourselves and in our introduction use the Theme of the day “Teacher’s day“ also the Word of the day “Bestow”.

Subsequently, Toastmaster of the Evening, Chitirra led the meeting steadily. Since we had guests, she briefed the History of Toastmasters International followed by introducing the role players.
Next, we came to the Table Topics Session. I (Ooi Yee) was bestowed the Table Topics Master role. Following were the topics which I prepared in advance and the name of the participants who spoke on that topic is right next to it.

1) Suggest few things that should change/improve in our education system?  -CP Lau, ACB ALB
2) Let’s share with us one of your unforgettable teachers.  -Jia Min (Guest)
3) What course would you study if you can choose again? – Lynda (Guest)
4) Don’t become a teacher. -Ivan Chee (Guest)
5) Imagine you were selected as the students’ representative to give a speech on Teacher’s Day. How will your speech like? - Gobinath(Guest)
After casting the vote for the Best Table Topic Speaker, we moved to the Assigned Speech Session. We had only 2 speakers today as one of the speakers was unable to attend the meeting due to some last minute emergency.
First Speaker: Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB
Speech #7: Research you topic (Competent Communication Manual)
Title: Emotional Outbursts
Evaluator: Tn. Haji Hashim Adnan, DTM
He shared,It happens — we all get emotional at work or on road. You might scream, or cry, or pound the table and stamp your feet. This is not ideal office behavior, of course, and there are ramifications to these outbursts, but they don’t have to be career-killers either. If you take a close look at what happened, why you acted the way you did, and take steps to remedy the situation, you can turn an outburst into an opportunity.
Second Speaker: Ron Yeap, CC
Manual: The Entertaining Speaker
Speech #5: Speaker After Dinner (Advanced Communication Manual)
Title: Remembering Mr. Lau
Evaluator:  CP Lau, ACB, ALB
Haha, Ron was brave enough to speak on an entertaining speech topic with a sad story.
As usual, we went for a 10 minutes break before the next heavy Evaluation & Reports sessions. Our smart and sincere General Evaluator Ivan Chow, CC, CL explained the session and led his team of evaluators to give evaluations on table topics and each project speech. We also practice open evaluation where the audience can share their opinions and suggestions on the speeches.
Open evaluation was followed by Grammarian report by Dr. Thilla, DTM, “Ah” Counter report by Shain and Timer report by Sivadas, CC. We collected a few Ringgits of “Penalty” from our members today, due to bad crutches and repetitive words. Good job, Shain! Members, please take the lessons.
Then, GE Ivan Chow, CC, CL presented his report. He gave some comments and constructive suggestions on how to improve the club and member speeches.
Finally, it was time for the last and exciting awards session before adjourning the meeting. Mr. President, Ron presented the award to the following winner, announced on the coming events and delivered his closing address.
Note: We didn’t have the best assignment speech and best evaluator awards today as there were only 2 project speeches.
Last but not the least, our club president Ron Yeap, CC , invited the guests to share some feedback about the meeting. Due to time constraint, we were not able to get the feedback from all our guests. However, we welcome them to share with us their thoughts anytime.
Time was up and Ron adjourned the meeting. Good night every one and see you in the next meeting!.
See you all again on 30th of May 2017.

Sincerely,
Thanks to the Team,
Manish Jha, CC
