Ascending To Success

This is the most exciting, enriching and fulfilling moment when we ascend to success. Ladies and gentlemen we together ascended to conduct the meeting number 379 in our club. We were valorous enough to have a fun filling, educational meeting on this Tuesday 25th April 2017. Ascending to Success was the theme of the day and ‘Valorous’ was the word of the day.
We started our meeting on time at 7:15pm. Assistant Sergeant At Arms Manish Jha, Competent Communicator called the meeting to order. As his role defined, to make sure the setup of our meeting venue is done before a meeting begins, and lead the members through the recital of Toastmasters promises. Yes he has done it diligently.

Our President Ron Yeap, CC greeted everyone, began his presidential opening speech by bringing us through the theme. Our grammarian had also introduced the word of the day, ‘Valorous’. Ron had then set the floor for everyone to introduce themselves encouraging everyone to use the theme of the day and the word of the day. Well, as I evidenced there everyone ascended to success while telling their success stories in their short introduction. It was worth knowing all of them once again.

Ladies and gentlemen please put your hands together for generous, humorous, and ever friendly Toastmaster of the Evening, Kelvin Chong, ACB. Yes, you heard me correctly, he is such a wonderful person. Kelvin, ACB briefed us on the history of Toastmaster International as well as the history of our club before introducing the role players.

The first presentation was done by Ken Chan, DTM in presenting his invocation presentation. His speech was truly uplifting by sharing with us about transformational leadership. Everyone learned a tip or two on the difference between leaders and managers.

Moving on, we have our seasoned Toastmaster, Serena Kong, ACB led us through the Table Topics session, one of the most exciting session in the meeting. She was the Table Topics Master. She had prepared the nice topics in colorful cards. We had four courageous Table Topics speakers.

The sun was almost set and the night was getting more exciting. This evening we were ready with 3 speeches from the Competent Communication Manual and one from the Advanced Communication Manual. Our 1st prepared speech speaker was none other than Toastmaster Chitirra, delivered her 4th speech from the Competent Communication Manual – How to Say It. Her speech title was ‘Drink and Dive’, and I was her speech evaluator.

Chitirra shared a story in her speech about a trip to Terengganu with two bosom friends. She used so many rhetorical devices, metaphor as this was in her speech objectives. She went to do snorkeling and ended up with very unpleasant trip. She learnt a very import lesson says, don’t just drink and Drive may cause an accident, also don’t drink and Dive into water. It may cause another accident.

Our second speaker of the day was Toastmaster Joel Silas. He was doing his 5th speech ‘Your body speaks’. His speech Title was ‘International Language’. His body languages added marks to his presentation. It was very funny, humorous and captivating to the audience. I love it very much.

Third speaker of the day was Toastmaster Yap Ooi Yee. She was doing her 6th speech ‘Vocal Variety’. Her speech title was ‘The Importance of Presentation skills’. To me, she is a very good speaker. Always speaks from the heart. On this day she not just used good body language which she learnt in her previous chapter. She also used very well vocals for different character in her speech. Her message was ‘everyone has a different speaking skill & presentation style. They are very vital in our life especially in career.  To be a good speaker, we can’t run away from practice, practice & practice’. Yes, it has deeper meaning.

Fourth speaker of the day was Ron Yeap, CC. He was doing speech #2 from Advanced Communication Manual ‘Speeches by Management’. His speech title as well name of the speech chapter was ‘Appraise with Praise’. Who doesn’t like to be appraised? All, correct J this was my day when speaker, President Ron appraised me in his speech. He asked me, when can I start my advanced speeches? I promised to start the next term. Thank you, Ron Yeap, CC.

Our sincere Timer EK Yeo, announced for the break, 15 mins. It was time to chill and fill. Chill with our fellowship and fill our hungry tummy.

Ladies and Gentlemen welcome back. We welcomed our General Evaluator, Ramdas Nayar, DTM. Ramdas was the Past District Governor, a very senior Toastmaster from MIMKL Toastmasters Club. As a senior Toastmaster he explained the meaning of speech evaluation. He called upon Table Topics Evaluator, Kevin Khoo, CC. Kevin was very sharp in listening all the Table Topics speakers. So, he was able to highlight the strengths and weakness about the speeches. It was really a constructive evaluation from Kevin Khoo, CC.

Ramdas Nayar, DTM had also called upon all four valorous speech Evaluators in the sequence of Manish Jha CC, CP Lau ACB ALB, Ken Chan DTM and Mathew Philippose CC ALB to evaluate the four wonderful speeches. It was really interesting and eye opener evaluation from them.
Role players were called to share their reports by our General Evaluator. Grammarian- Dr. Thilla, DTM. She is best in grammar like an experienced Grammar Teacher. Substitute Ah’ counter Toastmaster Wenny Loh, she helped our club to make some money from members who made the speech crutches. Thank you, Wenny. Finally, our Timer Ek Yeo, CC CL shared his precise timing report.

It was time to appreciate the best performers-

Our club President Ron Yeap, CC took over the control of the stage to summarize the whole meeting. I would say. With this we have ascended to succeed another fruitful meeting in our club.

Sincerely,
Thanks to the Team,
Manish Jha, CC
