25.08.2020 Meeting # 468- A New Chapter Begins

Word of the day: Abnegate

While public speaking is an essential component of success, it is also a phobia to many people.

I know I’m not going to screw up a RM1 million project, and I’m not going to lose anything, neither life nor money. But the fear of public speaking often gets the better me. What if I make a mistake at the centre of attention? What would others think of me?

Money Master-KL has brought me a refreshing learning experience in public speaking and new perspective on peer feedback. Here, I would like to share my experience and learning at this club meeting.

To kick off the meeting, the president Julia Leong, DTM, delivered her opening speech in crisp and clear voice.  She shared the tips of forming positive money habits and fostering meaningful relationships even with all the new norms in our new chapters.

Then the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) Mathew Philippose, EC2 took over the floor. While he was briefing on the club’s history, he showed his energy, enthusiasm and speaking from heart.

Later the Table Topics® Master Ron Yeap, ACG, ALB, started a fun Table Topics® Session. During this session, we had KL Loh, ATMG, Julia Leong, DTM, Manish Jha,IP1, Hj. Hashim, DTM took up the impromptu speaking. They presented different styles of well-structured speeches spontaneously and spoke in time.

As I watched on, I was actually learning a lot from these experienced and charismatic speakers. I get a better picture about how a confident speaker is like.

I attempted a Table Topic® question too. However, I was too tense and my mind went blank. I could hardly construct a proper sentence so I stammered a lot. I didn’t even know what I was actually talking.

Was I laughed for poor performance?

Did I get punished for using improper English?

No! Absolutely not.

In fact, my frustration and my thoughts of giving up only lasted briefly because of the other members’ response. As I was giving my speech, I noticed other members were nodding and smiling kindly. This somehow made me become calmer.  Later I received encouraging messages from the members recognising my effort, I felt being accepted and supported. With this support, I was motivated to take up the challenge again the next time.

Evaluation session was once dreadful for me. It was time I would be confronted with my mistakes and fault!

But at Money Mastery-KL, I just love how the evaluation is made.

When the evaluator Manish Jha,IP1 evaluated Julia Leong, DTM ’s prepared speech, he expressed how much he loved Julia’s excitement in her sharing and the colourful slides of the paradise in Malaysia. He then suggested and demonstrated how to increase audience engagement in the speech.

The second evaluator Hj. Hashim, DTM told the speaker Abdulrahman, PM2 that he liked the way he projected himself, completely at ease. He also acknowledged Abdulrahman’s effort on his compelling and well-constructed speech. Hj. Hashim then provided examples on how to incorporate power and feelings by using vocal variety to make it a more successful persuasive speech.

How about the evaluation of my Table Topic® speech which I thought a disappointing one?

Thank you Chitirra, LD1. She first empowered me by telling I had a good speech opener. She said she experienced my tense and she suggested that I do not focus on doing right or wrong and just be relaxed and allow my mind flow.

No judgement. No criticism.

I highly appreciate the constructive feedback from the honest and supportive evaluation. I am genuinely motivated when what has been done well is highlighted. The recommendations are indeed useful to improve to the next level.

Today we did not have voting for the best project speaker. However, the Best Table Topics® Speaker went to Manish Jha,IP1.  At the end of the meeting, President Julia Leong, DTM thanked the General Evaluator Kishan Doshi, DL5 for his time and his evaluable comments. The club will try to have more educational events in future.

‘Friends Helping Friends Succeed’. It is not only a slogan, it is exactly what Money Mastery-KL is doing. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the club members, providing supportive and positive environment where I can learn and grow.

11.08.2020 Meeting # 467- Sweat Now, Shine Later.

Word of the day: Paragon
Word of the day: Paragon

Toastmasters has in its nearly 100-year history grown into a platform that has become a launching pad for not only aspiring public speakers, but also for people in the fields of training, lecturing and even entertainment. Indeed, it will amaze you to know that even entertainers such as stand-up comedians have emerged from Toastmasters membership. Malaysia has one such example.

In respect to trainers and lecturers, the prepared speeches are an opportunity to try out how one is going to deliver a lecture or training program. Ignore the time limitation of any prepared speech. Just look at how you present yourself. Presentation is the attractive wrapper in which your content is delivered. An exciting speech captures attention, appropriate and quality content educates, informs and trains. The feedback loop that is quintessential in every meeting provides you the speaker with useful and insightful recommendations on improving your speech.

The meeting was opened by our charming president, Julia Leong, DTM. The meeting stated with the round of introductions. Later she talked about the famous martial arts exponent and actor, Bruce Lee and the wisdom that Bruce Lee displayed and told. When Julia Leong, DTM talked about Bruce Lee, memories of my teenage years came back to me. It was in the 1970s that Bruce Lee became a household name. Kung Fu fighting was a disco hit in the 1970s and credit must be attributed to Bruce Lee. Julia Leong, DTM, told some of the advice Bruce Lee left behind for us.

She then passed the floor to the TME, Abdulrahman, PM2. TME Abdulrahman, PM2, gave a detailed description of the club’s history and the mission of Toastmasters.

Our president, Julia Leong, DTM, introduced the Table Topics® session. She was very creative in the use of pictures to invoke feelings in the speaker and the speaker was to give a speech base on the picture. This is the first time I have seen this and I will share it with clubs in other clubs within and outside this country. Mathews Table Topics® speech as given with much passion and conviction. Our guest Oliver Ng, IP1 delivered a speech about how we are a part of nature and being suicidal can be avoided by our connections to family and friends. Chloe Lau, our new member, spoke about how we must struggle to reach our goals. The picture she chose showed birds flying and based her speech on it. I was the second last Table Topics®® speaker and I spoke about reaching our goals. My speech was triggered by the image of the sky. Ron Yeap, ACG, ALB, spoke about the problems with the use of tablets by children. He is a young father and this is a pertinent issue. Many parents must choose wisely how their children use tablets.

The prepared speech session then started. The panel evaluator, Chittira, LD1, and the General evaluator, Robert Ram, DTM, gave their instruction to the speaker and panel evaluator. Chloe’s speech was about false memory. False memories create problems. Her speech was from the Presentation Mastery of Pathways. The next speaker was CS Ong, PM1, and his speech was in accordance with the Presentation Mastery like Chloe’s. He spoke about mentoring and his experience in mentoring. He gave a speech on how he was mentored. It was a very informative and insightful speech. The last prepared speech was delivered by Mathew Philippose, EC2. His speech was about his father’s experience during the Japanese occupation of Malaya. His talked about how his father adapted well to the situation back then and escaped being sent to the infamous ‘Death Railway’. Time keeper Ron Yeap, ACG, ALB, said that there were no time disqualifications.

After the break, Manish Jha, IP1, gave a full and lively evaluation of the Table Topics® speakers. He had observed keenly how each Table Topics® speaker used the visual aids to make their speeches. He gave each speaker advise and room for improvements.

Next was the evaluation session for the prepared speeches. The first evaluator was Chitirra, LD1 who evaluated Chloe Lau’s speech. She described what she liked about the speech and the way Chloe expressed herself. Robert Ram, DTM, commented on Chitirra’s evaluation.

Tuan Haji Hashim, DTM, gave his evaluation of CS. Ong’s speech. A point worthy of note about the way Tuan Haji Hashim, DTM, gives an evaluation is his emphasis on vocal variety, passion and body language. Robert Ram, DTM, gave his opinions to both the speaker and evaluator.

Oliver Ng, IP1, gave his evaluation of Mathew Philippose’s speech and was definitely impressed with Mathew’s father’s experiences during WW2. Oliver Ng, IP1 advised Mathew Philippose, EC2, to get a laptop stand so that his image can be fully viewed.

Best Table Topics® : Ron Yeap, ACG, ALB & Oliver Ng, IP1 (Double Winner)

Best Speech Evaluation : Hj. Hashim, DTM

Best Assigned Speech : CS Ong, PM1

To conclude, it was a memorable meeting. It is no wonder that this club is a President’s Distinguished Club. Just look at its members.

28.07.2020 Meeting # 466- Compassion and Faith

Compassion and Faith, are the 2 essential pillars of humanity. Without any of it, we would turn into a ruthless, uncivilized, and unworthy person. In this meeting, we are going to discuss deeper around this topic.

The meeting started with President’s opening speech. Our president, Julia Leong, DTM, led the theme discussion by telling us a story that happened to her son-in-law’s dental clinic where the value of compassion was shed to a less-fortunate patient. It ignited the motivation to the members and attendees to share their personal stories of the moment they contribute without asking for any return.

The Toastmasters meeting program usually comes in 3 sessions, which the 1st session is called the Table Topics® Session; 2nd part is the Prepared Speech session where the members came prepared with their speeches according to the Toastmasters education requirements; while the 3rd session is called the Evaluation session where all the speakers that had spoken earlier were given a thorough feedback for their further improvement.

The first session kicked started by Abulrahman, PM2 who was the Table Topics® Master for the day. His topics related the impromptu speakers to the core of compassion and faith. We were fortunate to have seasoned speakers volunteer themselves to take up the impromptu speaking challenges. Among them are CS Ong, PM1, Datuk John Lau, DTM, Manish Jha, IP1, and Vijaykumar, CC.

The 2nd session of the meeting started with Hai Liang, our newly-minted VPE, took the lead to deliver the 1st project speech. He was delivering on Effective Coaching pathway Level 2 Project 2, Understanding Your Communication Style with the speech title “The Evolution of my Communication Style”. He shared with us his different experience and encounters while working abroad in many region and continents, and the communication style varied from place to place.

The second project speaker was Rey Thean, PM1 who was presenting a Level 2, Project 3 program from the Presentation Mastery path. Her title was, “My Blind Spot: The Button”. Through a personal incident that happened to her, she was able to learn a valuable lesson from her mentor. As she said,”A mentor is able to see through your blind spot immediately”

The third speaker was Mathew Philippose, EC2, whom would be delivering  a Social Speech from the Effective Coaching Pathway. He delivered an eulogy to commemorate the memorial day of Late Francis Ng, DTM, who was our passionate founding member and Past President. Although it was a short speech, we could feel the courtesy and sympathy it brought.

The meeting adjourned for a short break and resumed to the 3rd session, the Evaluation session. We need a freash pair of eyes to observev the conduct of the meeting for our improvement. The honor of this role fall on the shoulder of the General Evaluator (GE), who is Past District 51 Governor, Ramdas Nayer, DTM.

He invited his team of speech evaluators for their feedback to the speakers. KL Loh, ATMG provided his laser sharp observation towards the Table Topics® speakers. Next, Mr. GE also called for the project speech evaluators which included Manish Jha, IP1, Julia Leong, DTM, and Datuk John Lau, DTM to give their views and feedback to the project speakers

After the Technical Role Players had also delivered their report, Mr. GE took over the control to give his evaluation speech on the conduct of this meeting. By his observation, our club had done many things right. He like the way our evaluators gave their evaluation speech which was not meant to ‘white-wash’ the speakers. They provided a lot of constructive feedback and encouragement to motivate the speaker to perform better.

The meeting came to a closing when finally President Julia Leong, DTM took over the control again. SHe announced the best performers of the evening.

Best Table Topics ® - Datuk John Lau, DTM

Best project Speech - Mathew Philippose, EC2

Best Evaluation Speech - Datuk John Lau, DTM

In her closing speech, Julia reminded our members that this is the club that has the safe environment for members to learn and grow as our motto will always be “Friends Helping Friends to Succeed”. She spoke her closing message with strong compassion and faith like a caring mother, just like what the theme of the meeting had called for.

The final highlight of the meeting was to have everyone turn on their camera to pose for a group photo. The meeting adjourned at 9.45pm.

14.07.2020 Meeting # 465- The Beginning Of New Normal

Meeting #465 (14.07.2020) marked as the beginning of the term. It was our club first meeting and many were excited. Members joined the zoom meeting earlier and started to chat to each other.

The first highlight of the meeting was the President’s Speech. President Julia Leong, DTM urged us to uphold the achievement of President distinguished club and our mission of friends helping firends to succeed. In essence, she encouraged us to take up the challenge to be a better speaker, as she said, “if I can do it, you can do it, we all can do it.”

After that, we have a short self-introduction and talked about the theme, “The beginning of a new normal”. Many shared how they had adapted to the changes, for example, learn to attend new meeting, wash hands more frequently, practice physical distancing, wearing mask, “grab” food, buy groceries online and follow the Government SOP guideline in the workplace. In general, the “New” normal has impacted our life.

Followed by, an interesting Table Topics® session. Here are the topics:

Speakers

Topics

Victor Wan, DTM

Will you plan to have a new normal trip?

Guest Aizat, MS2

How does the new normal affect your life?

Rey Thean, PM1

What is the hardest thing to comply in the new normal?

Manish, IP1

What is your “new normal” dining out experience?

Chloe Lau

Will the “new normal” ever go back to the old one?

The second highlight of the meeting was the ice-breaker speech, presented by Chloe Lau. She looked composed, spoke out loud and clear in her presentation. Listening to her speech, I started to know her a bit more. She loves English and she turned her interest to career. Two years ago, she opened her English Centre and students learned the Grammar at different paces. She is proud to become an educator. She found that Toastmasters is a platform where she can learn the soft skill like speech presentation, giving feedback that helps to make her a better person and can impact more life. She hopes she can learn and grow in Toastmasters while improving her English and fulfilling her dream.

Rey Thean, PM1, on the other hand, gave a very engaging speech and many had responded to her questions in her speech. She spoke well, paced well and her research presentation was very interesting. Well done, Rey!

Our third speaker, Mathew Philippose, EC2, gave his hats off to the previous EXCO team on their contributions to the club. He brought us back and recognise their efforts. His speech was so motivating. Thank you, Mathew!

The third highlight of the meeting was having a good General Evaluator and with her strong panel evaluators in the meeting. It was so happy to see the progress of Chitirra, LD1 in her evaluation. Her evaluation was very lively, and highlighted the strength of the speaker. The evaluation was so encouraging and it is so important to the speaker, especially it was the first speech presented by Chloe in the club. Keep it up, Chitirra, LD1.

The fourth highlight of the meeting was the moment of encouragement. We voted the best performers of the night. The results were shown as below:

Best Table Topics® Speech: Chloe Lau

Best Assigned Speech: Rey Thean, PM1

Best Assigned Speech Evaluation: Hj Hashim, DTM

We had a splendid night. This meeting adjourned with good speeches, positive vibes and constructive evaluations.

23.06.2020 Meeting # 463- Begin With The End In Mind

A glimpse of thought from Cetani Chen, DTM

Thank you for the opportunity for blogging.

As I aspire to learn better English, I joined an English Toastmasters Club. This could be a good beginning, I thought, I might be able to expedite the learning process like a student. But after joining for some time, I found that my progress was really slow, disappointedly slow.

However, I had built a strong foundation from my Mandarin Toastmasters Club, and I will not give up no matter what.

I wanted to present myself and my thought naturally and freely, but words went disappeared when I came to the stage. That’s is horrible. I made the effort to read English magazine, like the Toastmasters monthly magazine. When I saw those well written articles, it motivates me to learn the language better. I understand the language, I can read the language, but how come it is so difficult to speak it out? I would stutter like an old chunky truck.

I made an effort to write a better script, use a better vocabulary, but I did not manage to memorize it. I tried a few times and I still failed to perform. I had to accept the fact that I have left English speaking for more than 10 years. I have to re-learn the language, like a primary school child. I have to simplify my presentation, take it one step at a time, most importantly, I want to keep myself looked natural.

The topic that I have selected is called “ The Gift of Love”. This presentation allowed me to express myself in a way I am comfortable with. Although my speech may not be grammatically perfect, I was glad that I manage to overcome my fear. After the presentation, I felt a sense of comfort level and confidence building up in me.

I really want to thank the supportive members in Money Mastery-KL, for allowing me to walk on this path with you. I will put in more effort to prepare more speeches, and complete my path in this term. I believe that my effort will pay off eventually.

09.06.2020 Meeting # 462- If It Is To Be, It Is Up To Me.

Word of the day: Clarity
Message from Club President, KL Loh, ATMG
“Are you taking total responsibility for your own success? Everyone who truly succeeds develops the attitude of a winner and becomes a leader. A positive attitude prepares you to success. How positive is yours? Are you excited about what you’re doing and where you’re going? What’s your attitude toward your career or business? How does stress affect your attitude? Total success includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle—a sound mind and body are key. Do you exercise and eat a balanced diet? Decision, commitment, dedication, conviction, and persistence are essential traits of a winner and leader. Are you focused on you dream and doing whatever it takes to achieve it? Do you make maximum use of your time? Some say luck has an impact on your ability to lead and succeed. Can that be true? Many say enthusiasm is key. But how enthusiastic are you? If It Is To Be, It’s Up To Me (Revised) shows you how to lead by setting goals and following your dream. You’ll learn the art of leading others for positive accomplishment and the essentials of HIGH PERFORMANCE LEADERSHIP. Tom Smith took his insurance agency from the bottom to number two in the nation. Along the way he suffered a stress-induced heart attack that almost killed him, but grew through it, regained his health, balanced his life, and ended up as a top leader in a highly competitive industry. He and his wife live in New Jersey. Read this book and you’ll know that…If it is to be, it’s up to me!”
