13.08.2019 Meeting # 442- Having Personal Integrity Accountability

Meeting Theme: Having Personal Integrity
Word of the day: Accountability

13th August 2019, my day wasn’t really started well. My emotion energy level was flat. I was contemplating the whole day if I could skip attending the Toastmaster meeting tonight. However, I can’t because I have promised to be the Grammarian for the day.

Dragging my feet to the club’s meeting room, I could hear everyone was chatting and enjoying the heart-warming Nasi Lemak with fried chicken and omelette inside the meeting hall. What a great meal to have before the meeting start! Thank you to our dear Treasurer, EK Yeo, CC, CL for always taking care of our breadbasket at each and every meeting.

As I entered the hall, the energy was superb. The smile and greeting by everyone was definitely an uplifting one. Without realizing it, my energy bar raised by 20%.

Just few minutes before the meeting start, our General Evaluator, S.K. Walia, DTM, or fondly known to Toastmasters as Mama Walia, came in with our Immediate Past President, Chittra, LD1. Everyone was so happy to see Mama Walia and all the senior members hugged and greeted her in a very warm and motherly manner. Being a new member to the club, I greeted Mama Walia and introduced myself. Her smile and tender hand shake warmed my heart and lifted my energy bar to 40%! Amazing!

Without further ado, our meeting 442 started. Theme of the day was “Having Personal Integrity” and word of the day was “Accountability”.

We started with the Assistant Sergeant At Arm (SAA) greeted everyone with her warm and lovely smile. After a quick reminder of the house rule and recital of the Toastmaster’s promise, the floor was handed over to the club’s President, Mr KL Loh, ATMG for the opening address.

This is the session where the theme and word of the day were used the most; from the opening address by Mr President to the round of introduction where all members and guests were invited to introduce themselves and shared thought about “Having Personal Integrity” and “Accountability”. In summary, I interpreted integrity as honesty to oneself and accountability is act upon the honesty. This reminds me of the famous quote by Sir William Wallace, “Every man dies. Not every man really lives”. To live your life to the fullest, ones must have integrity and accountability as both are the core values of a person must have in carrying out everything he/she does in life.

Everyone was given a chance to speak from the beginning of the meeting :)

Here came our Humour Master – Mr Matthew Philippose, CC, ALB! I used to have fear towards Mr Matthew, CC, ALB as he looked like my strict primary school English teacher who hardly smile and always commented on my poor grammar and vocabulary. (Until now, I still can’t believe that I was the Grammarian in this meeting!) However, today, he presented a totally different side of him! Started with a funny and hilarious laughter; he ended his speech with a humble smile. Bravo Mr Matthew, CC, ALB! You have lifted our meeting atmosphere to the top and my energy level was accelerated immediately to 80%!

Wow… Upcoming is another interesting session – the Table TopicsTM, the impromptu speech challenge!  This is always my favourite session because this is the session where you’ll find how every one of us dealing with uncertainty in just 20 minutes. For those who volunteered, their courage were definitely commendable. A big round of applause to our past President and birthday boy, Mr Ben Hoe, CTM, CL and our fearless guests Roger, Winnie and Amri! All your sharing today would definitely be our learning tomorrow.

Speaker 1: Ben Hoe, Speaker 2: Amrik, Speaker 3: Roger Oh, Speaker 4: Winnie

Next, this was what I called the Toastmasters moulding platform – the Assigned Speech, a platform that mould the members of Toastmasters from Zero to Hero; from a local listener to a world's top leader. Started with our new member Mr CS Ong who was doing his Project 2 that required him to learn about giving, receiving and applying feedback. Using feedback received during his first speech, CS Ong successfully delivered his second speech with tremendous improvement and full of confidence.

Pathway or Highway – this was the second assigned speech delivered by Ken Chan, DTM. Thank you Ken Chan, DTM for the brief explanation about the Toastmasters' new learning path – Pathways. I found the 10-12 minutes briefing beneficial for new members like me. After listening to him, I had a better understanding about the Pathways and looking forward to see more and more seniors to join us in our journey to Pathways!

"Is it true? Is it good? Is it useful?" This is the Triple Filter Test presented by our Area Director, Julia Leong, ACS, ALB. It was fun and entertaining to listen to her well-crafted story where she used the name “Ken Chan” in her story and we learned about technique to differentiate between rumours and facts by applying the triple filter test.

Drum rolling please! Here comes the highlight of the meeting - The evaluation and report session – a session that gave meaningful closure to the meeting. To all the speakers including Table TopicsTM,  not only that you will be told about your strength and weaknesses, but you would also receive constructive feedback/suggestion for future improvement.

This session started with Ms Chittira, LD1, evaluator for Table TopicsTM. Well Done Chittira, LD1. You were such an observant and sincere evaluator. All the guests were impressed with her truthful feedback and advice. Next, we have our senior evaluators CP Lau, DTM,  Tn Hj. Hashim, DTM, Mr Matthew Philippose, CC, ALB, who evaluated the speakers of assigned speeches and Ron Yeap , ACB, CL, who evaluated the evaluation report done by CP Lau, DTM. Listening to their evaluation reports, I believe not only the speakers, but everyone in the meeting has in fact benefited and took away a lot of useful skills and techniques of public speaking including the body language, eye contacts, facial expression, hand gesture, stance and vocal variety. A big thank to all.

Finally, Mama Walia, the General Evaluator took the stage! Mama Walia applied a PIE technique. Seven (7) Praise and one (1) Improvement. Where is the E? I remembered Mama Walia said, “Please invite me again even as a Table TopicsTM Evaluator.” Thank you Mama Walia, your simple acknowledgement is a great Encouragement to all of us. Please join us anytime either at Pathway or Highway!

Before the end of the meeting, the President presented awards to:

Best Table Topic Speaker      : Mr Tan Ben Hoe, CTM, CL
Best Assigned Speech           : Ms Julia Leong, ACS, ALB
Best Evaluator                        : The unbeatable Tn Hj. Hashim Adnan, DTM

Our meeting adjourned with a group photo session.

Looking at the screen showing our Theme of the day, “Having Personal Integrity” and Word of the day “Accountability, I took a moment to reflect what I did today. Because of accountability, I decided to attend the meeting and withhold my integrity toward my promise to my camaraderie as the Grammarian of the day. I have no regret and proud to be part of MMKL-Toastmaster Club. Guess what? My emotion energy level has surpassed 100% without me realizing it! Thank you everyone to be part of my fabulous day!

30.07.2019 Meeting # 441- Speech Evaluation Workshop

To benefit the members and Toastmasters community with the skill of giving speech evaluations, Money Mastery-KL Toastmasters Club (MMKL) had organized an Evaluation Workshop on 30th July 2019.

The Evaluation workshop started with our Sergeant At Arm, Rajendra, calling the meeting to order. The stage was taken over by President KL Loh, ATMG. Before delivering his uplifting opening speech, he gave a heartwarming welcome to each of our guest. Our Toastmaster of the Evening (TME), Ron Yeap, ACB,CL, took over the stage next, and shared with us the importance of giving a quality evaluation as it can make or break a speaker. He then introduced the panel evaluators, from CP Lau, DTM, Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB, Hj, Hashim, DTM; last but not least, our Workshop Moderator, Ken Chan, DTM. He shared the outstanding past achievements and awards the panelists had collected from club, area and district level.

Next up, Ron introduced our Test Speaker, Chitirra, LD1 on stage to deliver her final speech in the Competent Communicator manual.

Our Test Speaker, Chitirra, LD1 simply put the audience in aw with her heavenly beautiful voice as she sang, “When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother, What will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me”….a song named, “Que Sera Sera” by Doris Day, as the opening of her speech. Well done Chitirra, on the awesome attempt to catch the audience’s attention! As she brought us through a roller coaster ride from her least pleasant impression of Toastmasters to how she was inspired by her late mentor to be part of the Money Mastery-KL Toastmaster family. Laughter, silence and respect filled the room!

After the speech had ended, our guest and members were served with our MMKL’s signature nasi lemak, bananas and some local snack food; and mingled around to bond with one another.

The highlight of the day came when our moderator, Ken Chan, DTM, shared how the skills of evaluation will help an individual in their professions and also developing their leadership skills. He then invited our first evaluator, CP Lau, DTM on stage to present his evaluation. CP Lau, DTM gave his genuinely structured evaluation to our test speaker. He used the sandwich method to delivery his evaluation by first commending on what the speaker had done well in the speech, followed by what points she can improve on, and ended with what he loved about the speech and a touch on how the speaker can deliver a better speech in the near future.

Ken Chan, DTM took over and detailed some techniques used in CP Lau’s evaluation for the benefit of the audiences.

He then invited our second evaluator, Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB. Mathew applied a different delivery method in his evaluation. He structured the speech into the introduction, body and conclusion and state what was done well by the speaker. He then shared his opinion on what the speakers can improve on for her to move on to greater height.

To put things into perspective, moderator Ken Chan, DTM dissected Mathew Philippose’s evaluation which gave the audience a clearer picture on how evaluations can be done in various styles.

Ken Chan, DTM then invited our third evaluator, Hj. Hashim, DTM on stage. Hj. Hashim, DTM, danced through the stage with his rhythmic evaluation that keep the audience sitting straight! He started by commenting on what he liked about the speech, and followed by his opinion on how the speech could be delivered better and gave an inspiring ending remark to the speaker.

Ken Chan, again took over and gave the insight of Hj. Hashim’s delivery style, and also a summation of what attributed to the success factor of effective evaluations

The next part of the evaluation workshop was the Question & Answer (Q&A) session between the audience and the panelists. It was a fruitful session where the audience were given opportunity to speak out their perspective about evaluations and clarified their doubts during the 30 min Q&A session.

The conversation went on and became meaningful when audiences and panelists exchanged their thoughts on how to help a speaker through evaluation speech during the club meetings; how to win in the contest during evaluations; and how to use evaluation to empower subordinates, co-workers on daily basis. The conversation left many valuable key messages for us to digest.

Many thanks to CP Lau, DTM, Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB, Hj. Hashim, DTM, and Ken Chan, DTM once again for sharing with us the experiences you all have gathered over the years and the secrets to becoming an outstanding evaluator!

23.07.2019 Meeting #440- Service Above Self

Theme: Service Above Self
Word of the day: Altruistic

Money Mastery-KL Toastmasters Club was chartered on 22nd July 2002. This month we completed our 17th year anniversary. I am Mathew Philippose, As a member of this club for seven years, I have learnt much skill in speaking skill and leadership skill.  This is a place you can learn and grow.  On this day 23rd July 2019 we are entering era as we meet for our 440th meeting.

Walking into the club premises you can hear much voices, of members excitedly talking to each other and also much laughter as we are engaged in a friendly conversion in a jovial atmosphere. It was 6.45pm and members were enjoying on the refreshments for the day.

In Toastmasters meeting everyone is conscious of time, members began to get ready to be seated even before the Assistant Sergeant at Arms (ASAA) strikes the gavel.  Yes, it was 7.15pm, KT Chok, PM4 called for the meeting to order. He welcomed everyone to the 440th club meeting with a cheerful smile. He reminded on the house rules and led everyone to recite the Toastmaster’s Promise.

What really caught my eye as I recited the promises was the point “To serve my club as an officer when called upon to do so”.  In fact, it was so meaningful because the ASAA KT Chok, PM4 was called upon to serve when the appointed ASAA could not be present. This is a unique benefit in becoming a Toastmaster member ~ you are ready anywhere anytime in any event being able to take a role to lead.  As the ASAA completed his role, he handed over the meeting to our President KL Loh, ATMG.

The President proclaimed the theme of the day as “Service Above Self”. KL Loh, ATMG shared the meaning of theme and he welcomed all including all to have a fruitful time at the meeting. He later called upon the Grammarian to introduce the “Word of the Day”.  The Word of the Day (WOD) was “Altruistic”.  I always looked forward always to hear WOD because I always learn a new word in each club meeting. Sometimes it’s difficult to pronounce the WOD.  Usually we may not have used the WOD in our everyday language.  I learnt that this word “Altruistic”, means having or showing an unselfish concern.

The President gave each person the opportunity to introduce themselves at the same time to cease the opportunity to use the WOD and Theme of the Day. It was an experience as each of us made attempted to illustrate the WOD and the theme in our introduction. The President summed up the Introduction with his vision for the club with service above self.

Our President invites EK Yeo, CC, CL to give an innovation speech. EK Yeo, CC, CL is a senior member of our club. His invocation speech was very encouraging and uplifted the spirits to create such a great expectancy. This was followed by our Humor Master, CP Lau, DTM who filled our mouths with laughter and smiles that boost our happiness and elevate our mood. His personal stories were so humorous that kept us in switches.

Hearing these two great men speak, the club is now ready for challenging time to go into a new experience.  The President handed over the meeting to Toastmaster of the Evening (TME).  The TME is no other than me.  I am the writer of this blog and I wish to narrate to you precisely so as to draw your imaginations to give you a first-hand experience.

At our meeting, this day we had three guests.  For the benefit of the guest, I gave a brief history of Toastmasters and about our club.  Moving on, I invited our Table Topics Master, Chitirra Amirthalingam, LD1.  Our first speaker was EK Yeo, CC, CL who being a seasoned speaker, he managed to speak on his toes. Our 3 guests caught the idea of impromptu speaking, each of them Ms Rupal, Mr Authur, and Mr Chan all attempted to speak.  All the speakers managed to speak within the 2 minutes so non was disqualified.  That is the magic of Table Topics speaking within the time limit, is not so much what you speak but having an ability to speak impromptu.

Our next session was Prepared speeches, we had two speakers who spoke from the Pathway program and two from Advanced Communication Manual. Our first speaker Toastmaster C.S. Ong spoke on the title "My Entrepreneur Journey".  He is an Entrepreneur himself.  He shared how he struggled at his early years when he started business. Although he made heavy losses, he had to sacrifice much and finally survived. Today he is proud that his digital company is the leading provider in the Middle East. The audience was captured in awe to see this new member speaking so confidently in his second speech delivered at our club.

Our next speaker was Abdulrahman, PM1, He has reached Level 2 and doing his third project in pathway.  He has shown tremendous improvement,  his long speech title “A success Giver, A life Changer, A Respect – Earner”,   he confessed that Toastmaster gave him ability to be a well articulate speaker.  He spoke without much struggle. This man is an expat living in Malaysia as engineer. He said his success is due to his mentor and he said we all have to play this mentor role to help others succeed.

Our third speaker, Julia Leong, ACS, ALB. She is also our Area Director.  Her speech from "Skills to Thrill ", was very demonstrate speech that was entertaining speech as she gave her experiences in a canoe that needed all the skills and it was a trilling adventure.  Julia Leong, ACS, ALB was very expressive has she lifted her voice at a point when the canoe nearly hit a rock. She kept the audience hold tight to their seats.

Our final speaker is Ron Yeap, ACB, CL, with his speech “Preparation and Practice”.  He shared how as a presenter or speaker, need to look at details and rehearse every step clearly. The seating arrangement, sound system, room temperature condition and visual aid. Most of all rehearse the speech well.

As the speeches ended we went for a short five minute break.  Our ASAA KT Chok, PM4 punctually called back the meeting to order and handed the meeting over to me as the TME.  I reminded the audience that evaluation is the breakfast of champions. That gives us the power to go forward to achieve our success.  I called the General Evaluator (GE) Ken Koh, DTM to take over the second part of this meeting for evaluation from speeches to the evaluation how the club performed for the evening.

Without wasting anytime our GE invited the Table Topics Evaluator KT Chok, PM4 to give his evaluation for the Table Topics speakers. In a very interesting and humorous manner, he gave a vivid evaluation of very speaker as he encouraged them. He also highlighted rooms of improvement.   After that, was followed by evaluators for the prepared Speeches.

Speech Evaluator 1, EK Yeo, CC, CL gave his evaluation for Speaker CS Ong. He had much appreciation for his informative speech. At the same time, he gave Toastmaster CS Ong areas where he could further improve such as vocal variation and expression.  Speech Evaluator 2, CP Lau, DTM  evaluated speaker Abdulrahman, PM1. In his evaluation, he said Abdulrahman, PM1 had much improvement in his presentation, however he needed to further slowdown his pace of presentation. Our next evaluator Hj. Hashim, DTM gave his admiration for speaker Julia Leong, ACS, ALB. However, he said there must be more vocal variety.

The GE next called on the Ah- Counter, Oliva Chen, PM1 to give her report, the number of speech crutches that was spelled out kept each member aware how to improve in spoken language. Our Grammarian Rey Thean next gave her report.  As she pointed out how much we managed to use the Word of the Day, she also shared the areas of improvement and what were the misused words, sentences and pronunciation.  It was so interesting to hear the excellent phrases and sentences used during the meeting. The Timer Rajendra Prasad gave a detail and excellent report how we managed our time.

The GE, Ken Koh, DTM, continued by giving his report with praises for the club and at the same time areas of improvement the club need to take note. As the GE finished his report, he handed the meeting to me, the TME of the day.  As we came to almost the end of the meeting, I helped to announce the winners. The Best Table Topics Speaker went to our guest Ms Rupal. The Best Evaluator went to Hj Hashim Adnan, DTM who hold an unbeatable record in our club.  The President then called upon the General Evaluator to receive a Certificate of Appreciation and a gift on behalf of the club. As the President closed the meeting with his closing speech and announcements, all members adjourned for a group photo session.

The meeting number 440 has ended, however, members of Money Mastery -KL Toastmasters club look forward for the next meeting as it shapes each member to be a better leader and communicator for tomorrow.

09.07.2019 Meeting #439- Cherishing Our Friends

The 09th of July was a memorable night as it marked the very first meeting of the Term 2019/2020 with our oldest member as our newest President. Alongside our club’s motto “Friends Helping Friends Succeed” our theme of the meeting was “Cherishing Our Friends” with the word of the day being “Relationship”.

The ambience of the room was filled with delight and excitement as the new EXCO and members prepared well for this first and auspicious meeting. Our newest member Jocelyn, took the stage at sharp 7.15 to call the meeting to order and led us well through the Toastmasters’ Promise and gracefully passed the stage on to our new President, K L Loh, ATMG.

K L Loh, ATMG was full of zest and zeal and he jumped, clapped, and yelped during his lively first Presidential address. He cheered on all the past presidents, he introduced each and every one in his team of EXCO and he reiterated the glory of the club and the importance of Toastmasters. Flabbergasted!!!
The members and guests were given a quick opportunity to speak about the theme of the day and it was great as we reminisced out motto “Friends Helping Friends Succeed” and how much we really love Toastmasters and each other.

In this first ever meeting we had a double kill session with two amazing DTMs. We had both an Invocation Speech by C P Lau, DTM and a Humour Session by Ken Chan, DTM. C P Lau, DTM never fails to lift our spirits while Ken Chan, DTM never fails to spray some laughing gas in the air. With that, the tone and mood was set as the stage was handed over to our lovely lady, Area C1 Director and authentic member of Money Mastery-KL, Julia Leong, ACS, ALB who played the role as Toastmaster of the Evening.

Julia Leong, ACS, ALB, just like our President was full of vigour as she brought us through the history of the club and Toastmasters. She then introduced each of the role players. Today Phang Chew Yee, CC was the Ah-Counter, Chitirra was the Grammarian and C S Ong was the Timer. As General Evaluator we had the District Table Topics™ Champion, Robert Ram, DTM.

We then moved on to the fun and exciting impromptu speaking session called Table Topics™ by our Table Topics™ Master of the day, Ron Yeap, ACB, CL. He had with him an array of interesting topics on which members Vijaykumar, CC, and KT Chok, PM4 and guests Elysia, DTM and Guest Yazen attempted them and did great.

It was time to move on to the Assigned Speech Session where we had 4 speakers on the trail today. First up, we had Ken Chan, DTM doing the 2-2-2. His second path, second level, and second project on Understanding Your Leadership Style with his speech title “Different Stroke, Different Folks”. He highlighted the various leadership styles that exist and how each may differ or be applied to various individuals. His evaluator was Hj. Hashim, DTM who was bubbly and strong on his evaluation.

Next up, we had our Vice President of Membership, Abdulrahman, PM1 embark on the second project of his second level under Presentation Mastery. He was to do a speech on Effective Body Language with his title The Power of the Triple P Theory, The Rule of Success. He explained his life as a kid till he went on to work and how he became successful at where he is now through the power of “People Pushing People” to do something and motivate others to success. Rajendra was his evaluator who was also working on his Level 1 Project 2.3 on how to give an evaluation. He did well for his first ever evaluation.

Our 3rd speaker was none other than Olivia Chen, PM1 who returned to complete her Level 2 under Presentation Mastery. Under the Introduction to Toastmasters Mentoring with the title “The Torch Light”, she spoke about how her mentor nurtured her to be a better speaker and highlighted the differences between a mentor and a coach. She was evaluated by C P Lau, DTM who gave her his positive feedback on her topic.
Last but not least we had Ron Yeap, ACB, CL do another speech from his Advanced Communication Manual with the title “The Waterfall That I Fall Into” whereby he shared his personal story on how he nearly escaped death at a waterfall retreat he went to. With that he concluded that in life you don’t always get second chances. He was evaluated by our young and upcoming Evaluation Queen, Rey Thean, PM1 who gave her witty evaluation.

We headed for a short break after an overwhelming but enjoyable Project Speech Session. After that we went on for the learning session which was the Evaluations session. General Evaluator, Robert Ram, DTM took on the stage with might and energy and called upon the respective evaluators as mentioned above to do their evaluations. Before the Project Speech Evaluations, he invited Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB to first give his Table Topics™ Evaluation. Mathew Philippose, CC, ALB was humble and articulate in his evaluation as always which inspires the speakers to return as their better selves.

We had a quick round of Open Evaluation which is our club’s usual practice to enable all to provide their fair share of feedback. After that we had the respective role players read out their technical reports followed by the General Evaluator giving his best feedback for the betterment of the club. He was truly a ball of energy.
The floor was passed back to the beautiful Toastmaster of the Evening, Julia Leong, ACS, ALB who helped the President read out the names of tonight’s champions as follows:

Best Table Topics™: KT Chok, PM4

Best Project Speech: Ron Yeap, ACB, CL

Best Evaluation: Hj. Hashim, DTM

K L Loh, ATMG took on the stage to give his closing address with a bang. He invited the guests to give their feedback, congratulated our first time role players of the night who were Jocelyn as the ASAA, CS Ong as the Timer and Rajendra as the Evaluator. He gave his power packed closing address which made us want to return for sure for the next exciting meeting. Truly he has a way of knitting the relationship between the members with his sincere love and liveliness.

The meeting was adjourned with a group photo but that was not it as we gathered for a cake cutting session for our July babies Julia, Rey & Chew Yee. A simple act that can create a big impact on our relationship as a Toastmaster family from one of the best clubs in town. Truly we are Money Mastery-KL Toastmasters where we cherish friends as family. Love Always!
