MEETING #363 - National Day

A fifth Tuesday meeting is hard to come by, and it is falling on the eve of a nationwide holiday, the Independence Day on 31 August.

That’s right, our Fifth Tuesday meeting was on 30th Aug. To celebrate and indulge the meaning of Independence Day, we set out meeting theme as the “National Day”, with the word of the day “Equanimity”, which carries the meaning of having a calm mental state after a shock or disappointment.

Our Honorable General Evaluator is NJ Singam, DTM, who is currently serving as District 102’s District Editor and District Tamil Coordinator.

The meeting started with our energetic Assistant Sergeant-At-Arms, Manish Jha, CC, took over the stage and called the meeting to order. He led us through the recital of Toastmasters promise.

At this point, the President, Ron Yeap, CC was invited to deliver his President’s Address. He was delighted with the theme of the day, and also reminded all the audience not to forget the struggle of the nation’s forefathers in fighting for the nation’s independence, while enjoying the freedom under this sovereignty today.

The crowd was then invited to introduce themselves to the audience. Not only they resounded together with the theme of the day, they also used the word of the day “Equanimity” profusely.

Among the visiting Toastmasters joining us, were CC, Tan Jiao Han from Universiti Malaya TMC; CC, ALB Eddie Lai, from Air Products TMC; CC, Foong Sook Hwa from IJM TMC; and also CC, Sivadas from Friendship TMC. We also have Sima, a Doctoral student from Universiti Malaya joining us as the first-timer in Toastmasters meeting.

The Table Topic Session was taken over by Table TopicsTM Master, Manish Jha. We saw pro-active members and guests races to take part in the Table TopicsTM session from different Toastmasters club.

Coming to the Prepared Speeches Session, we got 3 speakers came prepared to present to us. Our first speaker is DTM Ken Chan, delivering from the Competent Communication manual, Project #6, with speech title Negotiate with Power. He assured everyone that everyone can negotiate with power with the principle which I can still remember and understood.

  • Put yourself in their shoes — it’s crucial to understand what’s important to the other side
  • Remember your own value — you are at the table for a reason
  • Ask questions — you’ll get valuable insight into their motivations and interest

The next speaker is CC, Ron Yeap, attempting the Advanced Communication manual, with the project of Delivering Bad News. His speech title was “Changing of Meeting Venue”. He was informing the audience the Toastmasters meeting venue of our club will be relocated, and left the audience with shocking faces, only to find out that this is just a mock-speech and not real news.

The third speaker is Kevin Khoo, CC, also attempting from Advanced Communication manual, with the project of Motivational Speech. He left us with a simple and memorable acronym called U.B.E.R., which stands for Unlocking, Breaking, Empowering followed by Realization. Kevin creatively curated a few small stories that lead the audience to understand the key points.

Then it came to the feast time to fill up our hungry stomach with PJ’s best nasi lemak, among other refreshments. The short break has served as a good networking session for members and guests to catch up with each other. As you know us the Toastmasters, are synonymous to enthusiastic people.

After the break, the meeting session started with the Evaluation Session. The session was led by the respectable senior Toastmaster, DTM NJ Singam. He first explained nicely the purpose and benefits of evaluation. I would say he was excellent.

The first evaluator was the Table TopicsTM Evaluator, ACG, ALB Julia Leong. Her detailed and encouraging remarks on the performance of the Table TopicsTM speakers were noteworthy.

Next comes to ACG K.L. Loh evaluating DTM Ken Chan on his CC#6 speech. It was so co-incidentally that K.L Loh also evaluated Ken’s CC#6 speech long time ago. This gave Loh a good opportunity to make comparison of Ken’s progress along the year. However, in the perspective of CC#6, he hoped to see more vocal variety being input into his speech.

For Hj. Hashim who were evaluating CC, Ron Yeap. Hashim commented that
Although this is a bad news delivery, but Ron did not show much of empathy, or sympathy, on his facial expression, he thought that would make the speech more impactful.

Evaluating CC, Kevin Khoo’s speech was ACB, ALB CP Lau. According to CP, Kevin’s speech was well crafted and had successfully uplifted the spirit of the audience.

At the end of the evaluation, the technical evaluators presented their reports diligently. They are, ACG, ALB Dr. Thilla for the grammar mistakes we made, as well as excellence use of the English language; speech crutches was picked up by ACB, Serena Kong as ‘Ah’ Counter; and capturing the time taken by every speaker and role players, CC, Sivadas.

DTM, Singam acknowledged that Money Mastery-KL has come a long way with excellence record. The meeting also met his satisfaction level in general. He urged MM-KL TMC to add in the Speaker’s Introduction before the speaker took the stage. This could help to edify the speaker as well as preparing the audience for the speaker’s topic.

The meeting came to the highlight when the best performers of the meeting were to be announced and appreciated.
A special was waiting for our long standing member past president Victor wan for being in Money Mastery -KL Toastmasters club for incredibly more than 8 years.

As a Toastmasters tradition we also asked our guest to say something about the meeting. How did you find this meeting.

The meeting ended nearly 10pm, which the members and guests were leaving with a smile on their face, for a fulfilling meeting they had had, and a relax holiday for the next day.

Sincerely,
Thanks to the Team,
Manish Jha, CC

Meeting #362: The Sound of Music

It was a pleasant evening when the Toastmasters fraternity came from their respective work to have an exciting meeting in our Toastmasters club. This was the meeting number 362. So far in last 14 years we have done three hundred and sixty one meetings successfully in our club. It’s an achievement for a club has we move 362.

The most handsome man, in the eyes of writer, is our Vice President of Education (VPE) Competent Communicator(CC), Kevin Khoo  who that day came up with exciting theme of the day “The sound of Music”. Sounds interesting, right? yes, The theme itself scintillated us at first (The sound of music), and later you can’t even imagine how all the speakers also mesmerized the audience with their scintillating speeches. You may be thinking why I’m using this word scintillating too many times. If you had been to our meeting you would have understood. In every Toastmasters meeting we learn a new word and add it to, our vocabulary. So this said evening we learnt a new word scintillates which means, “to emit sparks”. Now you too learnt it right. he he he.
Great is the power of the spoken word, when it is spoken in truth, by one whose life supports what he says.-Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, 1878-1965, Toastmasters Founder.

You too can develop a scintillating personality when you join a Toastmasters club. One of the way is just to practice, practice and practice your speaking skills. It will turn your speaking ability to an awesome piece as you display your scintillating skills.

Order, order!! Good evening the lovely ladies and ordinary gentlemen, welcome to meeting number 362.   Could you imagine who could say this? At this point of time when it was exactly 7:15pm. Any guess?

It was none other than our Sergeant at Arms (SAA) of this meeting; Our SAA was our VPE Kevin Khoo who has brought the meeting to order.  As usual after introducing the house rules, the SAA led the ritual of reciting Toastmaster’s promises. He then passed the control of the meeting to the President competent communicator (CC) Ron Yeap.

He came up with 100,000 ringgits smile and energy to set the stage on fire and make the atmosphere more comfortable for everyone to participate and speak in best of their ability. He called Grammarian who some call as a Language Evaluator to introduce the word of the day , which is “scintillate” which I introduced to you at the very beginning of my writing. Hahaha. Mr. President is not late to introduce this word but this is the way to conduct during the meeting. The grammarian as he introduces the word he also give some examples how to use this word correctly.  The President encouraged everyone to use this word as many times as possible throughout the meeting.  He also encouraged, speaking about the theme of the day which is “The sound of Music”. My friends, the sound is really important in the music as we all know, similarly sound is also important in our speaking as well as in our life, make sure you are producing right sound at right time, at right place, and source of the sound is correct. Otherwise, it may embarrass or make you smile when you fart without reason to anyone or with no one

In Toastmasters meeting we have three sections. First is the impromptu speeches also called table topic, 2nd prepared speeches and 3rd Evaluation of the all the speeches.  Why you need to know this because every section has its own purpose and benefits and followed by a lot of fun. You know, this day we had brand new member who came straight from the showroom of Money Mastery –KL Toastmasters club and took the courage to run the meeting from the beginning to the end. I hope some of you have already understood who I’m talking about, Yes Toastmaster of the Evening; she is none other than Toastmaster, Chitirra. She was not only brilliant but she was fabulous hosting the meeting. Well done!!

What I was doing??? Hehehe. I was table topic master offering table topic speakers to speak on the topic prepared by me. I did a lot of research to prepare these topics; I know you are excited to know what those topics could be? I would not tell you all but yes something like “How is music related to your life?” You can try to speak on it, make sure speak only for 2 mins and 30 seconds. Otherwise you will be disqualified. Hahaha. And I can proudly tell you the speakers spoke very well, which really gave us different perspective to think and see our life plays music in every moments through different emotions.

Toastmaster of the evening Toastmaster Chitirra moved the meeting to the next section and called first speaker of the day Toastmaster, Foo Fung Jiun to present his speech from competent communication manual speech number five  your body speaks, with speech title –“A heart stopping event.“

My friend, Foo Fung Jiun a health care professional by his profession. He came with very relevant speech to educate us, in short how to save a life when someone getting attack in front of you. He shared an experience how he was able to save a life but being a health care professional he has helped many people.  He came up with a Teddy bear to demonstrate how to act on the spot and show us exactly how we should act on the spur of the moment. He is a kind of speaker who spoke from the bottom of the heart. This evening we learnt really a new skill how to save life in a moment when going through heart attack. His speech scintillated us to take action when called upon to do so. Well done!!

Now, was the turn of 2nd speaker of the evening Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Ken Chan. He was doing his speech number six from competent communication manual on Vocal variety- With his speech title “You can’t please everybody”: -
How many of you think that you can? If you can, you are only a lucky person. It looks like a proverb but its real experience. You can’t please everyone in life. You can’t even please yourself many times. DTM, Ken Chan, shared his personal story you can’t please everybody. However, you can choose to be pleased while looking only good things in everyone and good things in every situation. Well done.

Our 3rd speaker of the day was anxious before he comes to the stage.

Toastmaster of the Evening Toastmaster, Chitirra called our last speaker Chong Ji Sheng. He was doing his 8th speech from the competent communication manual which is,“get comfortable with the visual aids”. His speech title- “It’s about time”. Now I remember I was also one of the speech evaluators this evening. I was playing a double role this evening. We learn sometime how to work extra when it is required in Toastmasters.
ChongJi Sheng came up with a very recent story happened in his life. He has recently completed his pre university and going to join his college. He shared how he had a party in his house to celebrate with his friends.  He said everyone that he really enjoyed the evening also they had a lot of fun. Time flew so fast that he did not realize that the event came to an end.  Often happens especially when we are having a good time, isn’t it right? J It was very hard to leave the old friends and say goodbye to them. Usually it happens with everyone.  He was sad but he was also excited for his new life in college. We all have to move on for the better as times moves on.

After all the scintillating speeches ourGeneral Evaluator(GE) Advance Communicator Bronze (ACB), Advance leader Bronze(ALB) Lee Tong Fong  who was quietly observing and enjoying the whole meeting took control of the stage and started with evaluation process.  He explained the evaluation is the breakfast for the champion because if you eat King Size notorious breakfast you can reach anywhere and at any level in the process of learning. He called all the evaluators in the order. The first to share was our Table Topic evaluator ACB, Serena Kong- Oh My God , she was brilliant evaluating all the four  table topic speakers. She highlighted the strength and weakness and followed by the points to improve. Well done.

Your evaluation was most valuable to us. Thank you. Panel of evaluators also did their presentation very well, EK Yeo, CC, CL;Hj Hashim DTM, and of course myself , ha,ha, ha ha. I should say we all the evaluators did a good job. As an evaluator you have to highlight the strength and weakness and give the points of improvements. This enables one to be better in the next speech.  There are many methods to do it, one popular method is the sandwich method in which one encourages share the point of improvement and encourage or exhort the speaker.  Hahaha. Finally our GE presented his report in detail on the overall conduct of the meeting which really helps a club do much better. This is how we learn things from each other.

It was time to embrace the reality and appreciate the best performers.

After appreciation President Ron Yeap took the control and acknowledged everyone’s effort including TME Chitirra to run the meeting smoothly on time. With this He made his closing remarks and called meeting to adjourn, wished everyone good night and waved his hand saying “Thank you and drive home safe”. It was indeed a scintillating evening with lovely and awesome people. Hope to see you in our next Toastmasters meeting.

Sincerely,
Manish Jha, CC

Meeting #361: A roseate experience

This was the time when Malaysian athletes were making records in RIO Olympic 2016 and successfully they managed to bag total five medals including four silver and one bronze for Malaysia. What a proud moment. This was the sign of roseate future for Malaysians.  This is why our Toastmasters in Money mastery –KL Toastmasters club thought to have theme of the day Olympic game, many of us introduced ourselves describing the purpose of Olympic game and meaning of the five interlocking rings. It was very interesting and warm rounds of introduction from each Toastmasters and guests later. This was one of the memorable days for Money mastery – KL Toastmasters club where three beautiful ladies took a winning step in her life and joined us to start their toastmaster’s journey together with us. It was a great moment.

Let me remember concisely, it was 9th August 2016, Tuesday, kicked off our meeting to order at 7:15pm by our sweet, pretty, young and energetic SAA (Sergeant At Arms) Yap Ooi Yee.  As per her role tonight she begun with explaining the House Rules and then recited “The Toastmaster’s Promises” along with the Toastmasters members. After that she passed the control to our newly elected club President Ron Yeap, CC to take this meeting forward. Toastmaster Yap Ooi Yee, well done!

Our club President Ron Yeap took over the control and explained a little about the theme of the day which is coincided with the current world sport event Olympic Game in Rio, Brazil and set the meeting where all can speak their own minds from introduction to the end of the meeting and that was amazing to feel and continue speaking. He also invited our charming Grammarian, toastmaster Chitirra to tell us word of the day with some examples. Word of the day was “Roseate”  in her sweet and audible voice. This is her 1st time to take up this role. Chitirra, Kudos to your courage to carry out your duty diligently. Mr. President also encouraged all the members and guests to use Theme of The Day and Word of the Day during self-introduction because "The more you practice, the more you learn".After the individual introduction Mr. President Ron Yeap passed the control to the Toastmaster who is charming, sweet and very friendly Toastmaster of The Evening (TME) Wendy Sim.

Wendy began with her million dollar smile to brief on the History of Toastmasters International especially to our guests Joel and Omer who is not a Toastmaster member. She invited the role players to explain their objectives as per their role:

The topics given to each participant were related to the Theme of the day “Olympic Game”. Participants of the Table Topics are:

CS’s Evaluator: KL Loh, ATMG encouraged that your speech was worth listening and showed him ways like real Ways(mobile GPS app) multiple path to improve his speech from the next delivery and advised him to keep practicing. This journey indeed, will make you an effective communicator and speaker.  You have great potential as a speaker.

Our next 2nd seasoned and entertaining speaker, any guess please?
Relax, he is none other than, Ken Chan, DTM (Distinguished Toastmaster) – He was doing his Speech No. 4 from competent communication manual: - How to say it, with speech title “C is King”.

Ken, as usual came up with an intriguing topic. It was indeed interesting and useful.  He intrigued and asked C means?  After pondering at lot someone from the crowed finally made a correct guess” means “CUSTOMER”. Is it sounds familiar to you? He said; treat your customer as a GUEST. Which means?
G- Greet the customer
U- Understand their needs
E- Explain features and benefits
S- Suggest additional items
T- Thank the customer.
Learning- Customer is really King in business so always have a genuinely positive attitude and willing to go out of your way to help a guest and satisfy their needs. They will be yours.

This topic was selected by him based on YLP (Youth Leadership Program).
How beneficial this program is for kids from the age 13 to 18 years which is going to be held in August 2016, also as per his past experience he added, how it benefited to the every participant, facilitators, role players, speakers and all the kids aspirants. Toastmasters conduct Youth leadership program to make a kid fluent and an effective communicator to open many opportunities in their life. He added what are the challenges he faced as an organising chair to plan the next event successful. So far the audience were expecting real event is going to happen in august. Audience realised it was just a speech only after the completion of his speech.
Ron’s Evaluator: Mathew P. CC, ALB encouraged and acknowledged his wonderful speech and added points for improvements like mange your time well which is not really acceptable in Toastmasters.

Friend helps friend succeed

Conclusion
During the Toastmasters club meeting, applause and encouragement are the key factors to motivate the members and the participation of guests.
The induction for the new members Chitirra, Wenny and Mandy was done by TME Wendy Sim.  Also mentors were assigned to the new members to comfortably learn and grow. Dr. Thilla was announced as a mentor for Chitirra and CP Lau as a mentor for both Mandy Chan and Wenny Loh. Especially as a new member, they need to concur their stage fear to enable them to continue their journey, improve public speaking skills in speeches, also leadership skills by taking up the roles as they have already done today. Kudos to all of them were able to take up the role diligently. As first time  timer, table topic master and Language evaluator. The support of other members are important to lead them though the course of Toastmaster journey.

Completion of the 10 speeches from the Competent Communication Manual (CC) are challenging. Some members make it only within the couple of months. Completing Competent Leadership manual (CL) with number of roles to fulfill in each project is another education which is also challenging. It is important to bring your CL manual and get it filled up every time you do the roles in the meeting like Timer, SAA, Grammarian, Table topic master, evaluator, Ah Counter etc. At the end, our General evaluator Boon sing Cheng- ACB,ALB shared his report as his general observation over the entire meeting and suggested us how to do more quality meetings.

It was time to adjourn the meeting. So, Mr. president Ron Yeap exactly by 9:45 pm as per the agenda, announced that the meeting is adjourned now while knocking on lectern with gavel in his hand, also wished all the August babies a sweet happy birthday followed by sweet cake cutting –Ooi Yee, CS Quah, Ben Hoe and Kelvin Chong “Happy Birthday, Healthy and Prosperous”. It was a lovely meeting with lovely people in this evening. Thank you all toastmasters and distinguished guest. Hope, see you again.

  Sincerely yours,
  Ekey Yeo. CC, CL

2016 / 2017 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contests

" An Experimental Learning Experience!!"

I was rushing from my office because the contest was about to begin in few minutes which comes only once in a year and at the same time weather scared me with full dark clouds, thunder and lightning over my head. I was too obstinate to keep moving until I reached to the venue. Somehow I managed to reach the club by 7 pm and it started to drizzle. I was happy, anxious, excited and yet too angry at my boss in office for what he said, “You do your speech and come back to work immediately”. I was one of the contestants on this day in our club Humorous speech and Evaluation contest 2016/2017.

I’m a kind of speaker who always loves to speak last. That day because of my caring and yet unmanaged boss, I had to ask my lovely contest toastmasters- Wendy Sim and handsome Foo Fung Jiun that I would like to speak as the first speaker in humorous as well as in Evaluation contests with my heavy heart. With that I had to change my favorite speaking slot number from 5 to 1.

By the time contest venue Money Mastery -KL Toastmasters club was once again jam packed with chuckling audience to enjoy and entertained by the contestants.

Contest Chair the very lovely and yet very pretty Yap Ooi Yee, she was busy organizing the contest and sweating to make this contest successful at any cost. I was heartfelt to see new members like Mandy, Wenny and Chitirra helping so actively in full swing. Half of my brain was on my phone to see if my manger calls me to get back to work.

All set to learn, inspire and laugh out loud tonight when the SAA (Sergeant- At -Arms) Sharian Raj, CC called contest to order exactly by 7.15 pm.

I started feeling nervous and breathing tight when I looked at the massive crowed.  When I looked at other contestants, noticed they are hiding their nervousness through their sweet and gentle smile and say as if, bro we are in the same boat.

Soon after the contest chair’s opening address Contest Toastmaster Wendy Sim called my name Manish Kumar – Run, Run and Run and I ran from behind of the audience to the front.  All were surprised and stared at me with no clue, and soon all realized it was just a speech Title.

I did, my performance I can’t say was the best because best were yet to come. I tried to inculcate a simple message into the audience’s mind-  Run, Run and Run - every day, irrespective of days Sunday ,Monday or time morning or evening because reward of running everyday is so big, that you can’t just imagine that bigger in your mind until you run regularly. I shared my experience, how I became LCD from CRT in terms of thickness; also in the next level how I achieved LED thickness from LCD simply by running everyday early morning. There was a time when my best friend, Priyanka told me once when my friends used to say a 5 little Coca Cola bottle- Manish either you do something for yourself or God definitely will do. On this, I went straight to a temple and said, God either you make me slimmer and taller or make my friends fat and short just like me.  That means I was not just fat and I was obese. Finally I killed the biggest killer of my life and I killed obesity simply running every day. I also told my audience it’s time to become SMART LED and showed them ways, by doing Gym, mediation, swimming.etc, which I still do constantly from the past 5 years.

I can be your inspiration or you choose someone else to be, but never stop running. Having said that, I had great time with my speech when my audience acknowledged me; however I missed many funny parts of my script. On the other hand, Mathew P.- was getting ready with his Bicycle. Not really bicycle -a speech title called Bicycle. What do I have to say about Mathew, he is my inspiration, I have always dreamed to speak like him. The moment he jumped on the stage and holding a green color card painted with a picture of a bicycle. I guessed, it was definitely some funny childhood story he was going tell us, and that was what he exactly did. While learning how to ride a bicycle how he fell down and checked If nobody noticed him and tried to act cool. I too had the same experience when I was small and I think I know you too would had the same experience if you have tried, especially with a big bicycle. He really entertained us and inspired us.

By the time, CP Lau was getting nervous, Mathew-WHY LIKE THAT? CP Lau not just entertained us but also convinced us with real time example why like that. Audience was enjoying, smiling, giggling and laughing. It was mesmerizing moments to see.

It was Ken’s turn, Ken was searching a ground to intrigue audience mind and asked who thinks he/she is a sucker. No takers!

Why, because no one wants to be a sucker right? Hahaha ! A sucker gets the shorter end of bargain, being taken for advantage, taken for a ride. Ken accepted that he born to be a sucker. He started with natural nourishment, using pacifier in primary school and punished by parading in the hall of fame (Shame).  He met at work many suckers around. Toxic people- suck your energy, called energy suckers. Hahahaha...

Ken said a wife is a sucker for someone who can make her laugh and say sweet nothing to her. He has been married for 30 years and makes puns of his interactions with his wife. All married members of the audience laughed out loudly.  I didn’t understand why so loudly, my friend who was sitting next to me said, you get married 1st.
My friend’s, world really needs suckers, not everyone can win who can make the world go round. It’s okay to be Sucker but be a smart sucker and has the last laugh. So, join me and say I’m a sucker. All applauded with soulful laughter.  Kevin Khoo was also not behind anyone. He shared with us, how to find different types of personalities that are needed to create a dynamic team, sounds great right? True my friends, if you really know the technique you can have super productive team at work.

The meaning is very clear, to know the potential of someone who is good at what and bring them in that team that only a effective leader can do and a leader could be anyone me, you or anybody. In Toastmasters we practice how to be an effective leader.

It was time to have evaluation contest.  You will not believe our most daring speaker SS Cheng who had never done any evaluation in club meetings but he dared and evaluated our test speaker directly in evaluation contest, hahaha!  My eyes remained wide open for 100 meter long and 500 meter wide and nearly for 2 minutes without blink. I saw him evaluating. Hats off to you SS Cheng, you were awesome.
Time really flies, soon time came when Chief Judge Gerard A peter he got an envelope in his hand and moving towards Contest Toastmaster Wendy Sim. Guess what this envelop would have, some surprise. It was the moment of the truth. All the contestants once again felt nervous with their hope and ready to face the moment of the truth. Soon announcements were made.
Our Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Ken Chan once again crowned as winner in Evaluation contest and Mathew P. was crowned as Humorous speech champion. It’s not easy for everyone to make someone laugh; only champion can do.

It was an experimental learning experience. Life is short my friend. So, laugh and make all others laugh. Let’s be the part of Toastmasters community and give your best to world champions of humorous public speaking. You too can be. Being a contestant in the Humorous speech and evaluation contest, for me it was another level of experimental learning experience which can only be experienced. I saw, how an ordinary person can develop extra ordinary skills from their numerous practices to spread sea of laughter in the world.  I also evidenced leadership on this day from our young leaders. Usually we practice leadership in every meeting by taking up different roles voluntarily. Each role demands different set of challenges. Here, our challengers were so actively doing their roles like multimedia support by Chitirra, Sergeant- at- Arms (SAA) Mandy ,Wenny and Sharian  to make sure the every second contest is going smoothly. With that wonderful time we came to an end to finish our contest. I hope you will join us once again to support of our champions in Area level contest which is on 24th September 2016. Money mastery will rock once again. See you all. Time to say Good night. we shared our one of the best moments and a a warm hug to each other and in this way another wonderful night registered in the history of Money Mastery-KL Toastmasters club.

Yours Sincerely,
Manish Kumar, CC
