Build a Door for Opportunity to Knock On

Opportunity
presents itself in many ways and is defined as a set of circumstances that
makes it possible to do something. There are so many apparent connections
to a growth mind set, entrepreneurship, and innovation. However, we must
understand that opportunities will not just drop in our laps if a culture of
possibility is not developed. You can always wish for something, and if
you are lucky, it might come true. Unfortunately, this is not realistic or
practical. On the other hand, you can act to create a different and better
culture defined by actual outcomes aligned with improvement.
It
might be hidden; it might be obvious, but it is there. You now have an altered
perspective because of what happened. Use this perception creatively to seek
out the direction which will empower you in a way unlike ever before. Don’t
just discover opportunity, but also build doors to welcome it in.
It was
a cosy evening. As usual the club had arranged their signature food–Nasi Lemak,
fried chickens, omelette eggs, bundle of bananas, curry puffs and fried sweet
potatoes. Of course, a birthday cake for December babies. Upon
arrival, the meeting room was ready set up by Rey, PM1, Mathew, EC1 and Ron,
ACS, ALB. Kudos for their initiative and commitment to come early to prepare a
friendly environment before the arrival of members and guests. A minute later,
the members and guests came in. The guests were well received with
warmest welcome by all the members with compliment of light refreshment before
the meeting.
At
7:16 pm, the Assistant Sergeant-At Arms CS Ong was called the meeting to order.
He reminded members and guests of the house rules of the club before invited
members of the Toastmasters to recite Toastmasters’ promise.

CS Ong passed his control to Club Acting President Rey Thean, PM1 for her
president’s address. She welcomed our members, guests and General
Evaluator Srinivas, DTM. She gave a motivated and inspiring speech revolving “If
Opportunity Doesn’t Knock, Built A Door”. Grammarian Oo Hai Liang was invited
to share with us word of the day “Ebullient”. Then, she invited members and
guests to have self-introduction and encouraged them to use the theme of the day
and word of the day within the time limitation of 45 seconds for each one of
us.

KT Chok, PM4, the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) took
over the control from the President with his welcome note. He displayed his
ebullient and enthusiasm by sharing with us the history of Toastmasters
as well as our club history. He introduced the role players (technical team) and invited them to
share with us their roles for the meeting in the following sequence:
Ah-Counter – Nantha
Grammarian – Oo Hai Liang
Timer – Alan Ho, MS3
General Evaluator (GE) – Srinivas, DTM
After that, it was our club Table Topics™ session. Ron
Yeap, ACS, ALB was the Table Topics™ Master for
this session. Table Topics is an impromptu speech, you can speak within the
topic or out of the topic as long as your speech with opening, body and
conclusion. Each participant will give a topic within a time limit minimum of 1
minute and not more than 2 minutes 30 seconds. At 1 minute the green light will
be on and stay for 30 seconds. At 1 minutes 30 seconds the amber light will be
on and stay for 30 seconds. At 2 minutes the red light will be on and stay for
30 seconds. The 3 lights will be on once speaker exceeded 2 minutes 30 seconds.
The

2) Preston Ong – "What were your greatest
opportunity you ever have?"
3) Hj. Hashim – "With great
opportunity will come great success, do you agree?"
4) KT Chok
– "Opportunity for who are prepared."
All
the Table Topics™ speakers came to the stage with confidence and delivered their
speeches fluently without any hesitation, most importantly within the time
limit allocated. Good job!
The next session were prepared speech session. We had 4 speakers who were from different background and their topics were informative, motivated and interesting.

The
meeting had a 10-minute break before starting the speech evaluation session. The session were led by GE Srinivas, DTM. Without further delay, he invited his panel of
role players to have their report.
Table Topics™ Evaluator, Wendy Sim, CC suggested some areas of improvement for the speakers:
A) Stage control- move around the stage with purpose
B) Speech structure- A good speech must contain an opening, body and conclusion
C) Volume control- be aware of the note and pitch when speaking
Followed by the speech evaluators to give their personal opinion to the speakers. Not only that, our club also provides an open evaluation to allow members to give suggestions for improvement to the speakers too. Members who participated were KT Chok, P4, Ron Yeap, ACS, ALB, Julia Leong, ACS, ALB, Alan Ho, MS3 and Oo Hai Liang.
Next, GE called the technical team to give their reports before he gave his evaluation to the club. He was impressed with the displayed ribbons of the club achievement and wanted us to keep it up.
The meeting was about reaching to the end. The below was the result for the best performers in this meeting.

In the meantime, Acting Club President Rey Thean, PM 1 appreciated also presented token of appreciation to Srinivas, DTM who spent his valuable time to help the club by giving his feedback and constructive recommendation.

Club President acknowledged the newly joined members who were first time took up the role in the meeting. They were Nantha (Ah- Counter) and Oo Hai Liang (Grammarian). Also, she appreciated GE Srinivas, DTM who spent his valuable time to help the club by giving his feedback and constructive recommendation. She also gave a
special thanks to our guest Muhannad for his feedback.

meeting adjourn at 9:45 pm with Group photo taken followed by birthday
celebration form December babies.
