Meeting #365 : Celebrating Togetherness

The 27th of September 2016, one of the dates of our MM-KL Toastmasters Club Meeting that will be remembered. An annual affair, a rare sight, a treasured moment. For having had our beloved International Past President, Datuk Dr. John Lau, DTM, the theme of Celebrating Togetherness sure did coincide with the occasion.

When I arrived, everyone was already seated to commence the meeting. I had that 10 minutes to quickly prepare for my role.
Q: My role for the night?
A: Grammarian
Q: Word of the day?
A: Camaraderie.
Q: Definition?
A: A feeling of good friendship among the people in a group. Just like us.
Q: How to pronounce?

A: Ha ha! Good question. Throughout the night we were struggling with our tongues but anyway it is pronounced as kam-ra-de-ry. You should try it. Ha ha!

On the dot at 7.15pm Advance Communicator Bronze, Advance Leader Bronze (ACB, ALB) CP Lau replaced Foo Fung Jiun as the Assistant Sergeant of Arms (SAA) to call the meeting into order.
He reiterated the house rules as usual, lead in reciting the Toastmaster’s Promise and invited our President, Ron Yeap, Competent Communicator (CC) to officiate the meeting.  A role is taken over by any member of toastmaster in the event a member is not available for the role at the moment.

Mr. Ron Yeap is one who is always filled with excitement but manages to control it with his calm composure. He reflects all his excitement through his charming smile and sincere delivery of speech. He acknowledged Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Datuk. Dr. John Lau’s presence and shared his thoughts on celebrating together without forgetting to mention the word of the day, camaraderie, a couple of times.
He then called for me, the Grammarian to introduce the word of the day and then the others followed with sharing what they felt about today’s theme, “Celebrating Togetherness”.
Alas when everyone was done the floor was passed back to the president who then called upon the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) and this time it was non-other than our new member Mandy. I’ll have to give her the credit for she organised herself well and smoothly brought us through the meeting without any hitch. She was confident and never lost that pretty smile on her face. She briefed us on the history of Toastmasters and then called upon all the role players to introduce their roles.
The Grammarian who is the language master for the night was me, Chitirra. The “Ah” counter who is the critical observer of speech crutches was Serena Kong, ACB, and the timer who tracks the time for everything including herself was Wendy Sim.
Finally, our General Evaluator (GE), Ng Yee Chia, CC from  IEM Toastmasters Club also introduced his role as the GE for the night.
We then moved on to the fun and interesting session of Table Topics hosted by Competent Communicator, Advance Leader Bronze(CC, ALB) Mathew Philippose, The topics were all centered around the  theme of the day “Celebrating togetherness”.   We learned a lot from the string of speakers.

Everyone was really good with the impromptu session and that was when I saw Datuk Dr. John Lau in action. He was simply mind-blowing. His transition from happy to sad was superb. It was like as if he held the audience under his control like a puppet. With the snap of his fingers he could turn a smile into sorrow.

We then moved to the assigned speech session. I couldn’t wait to see Wenny Loh deliver her first speech. Mandy proudly introduced her best friend onto the floor. Wenny’s ice breaker speech was entitled W.E.N.N.Y. and as per the title, she emphasized that her name is Wenny and not Winnie the Pooh. I figured we had so much in common. She too despises accounting and loves to teach just like me. She really wasn’t the Wenny and I first met. I could barely hear her the first time I met her but I’ve seen her go through many table topic sessions and all her efforts shined today as she delivered her speech today with ease and composure. As per our Toastmaster’s tradition, everyone gave her a grand standing ovation.

The next speech was by one of our comical members, C.S. Quah. This man naturally makes me laugh when we have a chat. Today he delivered his fourth speech on how to say it with the title “The Art of Throwing”. He gave us ideas on how to dispose unwanted junk and it was pretty beneficial to all of us.

Then the great Ken Chan, DTM came on stage to deliver his speech number seven on Research Your Topic entitled IQ vs EQ. He always delivers his speeches with charisma. This speech revolved around how we can succeed even better with a stronger EQ.

At last, under the Advanced Communication Manual, we had our famous golfer Kelvin Chong, ACB on speaking to inform with an intriguing topic “How to Be a More Manly Man”. It was his A-Z guidance speech on how a man should be better both mentally and physically. Nevertheless, the women too obtained some good advice as well as it contained many life lessons such as how inner beauty is always better than outer beauty, how we should not shun away our obligations and how we should always be positive.

The evaluation session also known as the breakfast for champions begin after a short break. The General Evaluator Yee Chia took over the session at this point and was very engaging with the crowd. Upon explaining the session, Kevin Khoo, CC took on the evaluation session for the Table Topics. Then the assigned speech evaluators Hj Hashim DTM for Wenny, Dr Thilla ACGfor CS Quah, Ben Hoe CTM, CL for Ken and Datuk Dr. John Lau DTM for Kelvin. Each presented their thoughts and feedback in their own unique styles.

The GE then got the reports from each role player who were very detailed in their reports.

The night came to a close with the awards presentations, announcements and closing address. Firstly, the best table topics went to none other than our International Past President Datuk Dr. John Lau, DTM. That’s something everyone guessed. Next, the best evaluation was also bagged by Dr. John. That was a double kill and alas the best speech was bagged by non-other than Wenny herself. She truly deserved it.

After the daily awards, Manish gave out some appreciation awards for those who assisted in the Area Humorous & Evaluation Speech Contest 2016.

With that Ron closed the meeting gracefully and we all took a beautiful group photo with our International Past President.

The President Distinguished Ribbon 2015/16, the award from Toastmasters international  received by the Immediate Past President Mathew from Datuk john Lau DTM.

Truly the meeting was all about togetherness and everyone is looking forward to see Dr. John sometime soon next year!

"Camaraderie was at its best"

MEETING #364 Euphoric Evening on the eve of Mid-Autumn Festival

Our 364th meeting was on 13th of September and this year the mid-autumn festival falls on 15-Sept-2016. Thus, we set the theme of the day as “Mid-Autumn Festival”.

It was an euphoric moment gathering all members to celebrate this occasion in advance. Together, we learnt and at the same time enjoyed a lot, that’s what exactly we do in our Toastmasters meetings.
The assistant SAA, Kelvin Chong, ACB called meeting to order at 7.15pm sharp, introduced the house rules and led the recital of “A Toastmaster's Promise”.

Kelvin Chong likes to speak and can feel that he enjoys the stage very much. Sure,he would grab this opportunity to give his solo talks before passing the control to president. We were always engulfed with euphoria after hearing his talk. So far I don’t see he daunting.

Without further a due, let’s welcome our President, Ron Yeap, CC. First of all, Mr. President gave a warmly welcome speech to all the members and guests.Today was a very special day.We have 4 guests in the meeting including the sweetie General Evaluator (GE) Chelsea, ACB from Phoenix Toastmasters Club. The 2nd guest was Chelsea’s love Calvin. The 3rd visitor was a young and studious guy, Joel. The 4thvisitor was Dr. Natasha, our member Chitirra’s best friend. This was the best time to make our networking with such beautiful people and friends.
Ron, invited Grammarian, CP Lau, ACB, ALB to share with us the word of the day “Euphoria”. CP Lau explained the meaning of the word and also gave some examples on how to use the word correctly. Euphoria means a feeling of great happiness and excitement which we already had about Mid Autumn festival.

Subsequently, the first challenge came. All the attendees need to introduce them and speak something related to the theme of the day and the word of the day. You can see some of the attendees rolling their eyes to think of an idea. This moment was not easy to speak but since we all accepted the challenge to speak. We spoke well and it was full of euphoria around all the beautiful faces. See, I used the word of the day again ha haha.
Now, the Toastmaster of the Evening (TME), Kevin Khoo, CC gave all the guests some idea about Toastmasters and how it works. I like to see him on the podium, he is a very confident and charming speaker. Kevin also introduced all the role players and called all the role players to explain their roles tonight.

Next, we came to another nerve wrecking session which was Table Topics session.Manish Jha, CC was in charge of the whole session, he came out a few challenging topics which related to the theme of the day. All members and guests are encouraged to participate in this 2 minutes speech. This is really a good session to train our impromptu speaking skill.

Time to Begin“Assigned Speech session”:- There was another special occasion whereby we had two Ice Breaker speeches on the same day. Chitrra and Mandy, our new members were giving their first speech, The Ice Breaker. This speech is mainly to introduce something regarding themselves to let the audience know more about them.

Chitirra’s topic was “Passion is Purpose”. She shares with us her family, herself and then telling us about her passion. Her passion is teaching. She reminds us that every one should have own passion in life and put their passion in the purpose to make the life more meaningful and beautiful.

Next speaker, Mandy speech Title “Myself”, she shared with us how her name came about, her school time, and her feeling of euphoria on waived of RM80K study loan because of the first class honor achievement in her degree!!! My God, RM80K my eyes remained wide open till her speech got over. Awesome.

The 3rd speaker was CS Quah, a very friendly and funny guy. You can always find his face is full of smiles. He was doing Project# 3 from competent communication manual Get to the Point. His speech title “Idea MISS Validate”.

He pointed out that we always must validate our billion dollar idea before someone else steal this idea. The idea which is really beneficial should be validated by bringing into Action. If you are able to bring your idea into Action you are succeeded if not the value of the idea will remain 0 always, but may be someone else can create the worth later.
Ops, He challenged me that he will complete his CC projects faster than me. Quah, Challenge accepted, see you in the race. Ha ha ha.

Other than the Competent Communication project speech, Dr. Thilla, ACG, ALB, was doing her High Performance Leadership speech today. Her speech title “Leadership Learning Experience” After this speech, she will be awarded the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) title, the highest honor in the Toastmasters’ educational program. Congratulations Dr. Thilla. Hat’s off to you.

As usual, we were having a 10 minutes break after the assigned speech session. Let me show you what we have today for dinner. Nasi Lemak, egg, fried chicken, curry puff, biscuit and more, can’t wait anymore, mouth watering. Also ‘Moon cake’ in advance, I’m sure you also wish, I had been there. Mouth is watering right, I see ha ha ha ha Yummy….

Today, there was no banana as Quah explained he had no time to get any. Hmm, I guessed he wanted to practice his speech. I can understand buddy. Yet, all food was tasty.

Time flies, 10 minutes passed very quickly while all Toastmasters were busy eating and what? chatting.Timer Ooi Yee (my self) alerted the SAA Kelvin Chong, ACB to call meeting to order. I still remember, Kelvin Chong was non-stop talking with other members when I reached him. It seemed, he got dampened by me as I had interrupted his solo talk, haha. Luckily he was able to manage his euphoric mood and called meeting to order. Once all the members settled to their place, he passed the control back to TME, Kevin Khoo, CC.

Kevin Khoo, invited the famous sucker of the MM-KL Toastmasters club DTM, Ken Chan, to practice his speech for the upcoming Area Humorous Speech contest. We had a lot of food before he could suck. After hearing his speech, all attendees were giving chance to evaluate Ken’s performance so that we could share some idea to him on how he can do better in the contest.

Afterwards, we were at Evaluation to be done for the lovely speeches. The GE Chelsea, ACB took control of the stage and explained the purpose of evaluation session and called each evaluator to give their best evaluation, table topic evolution followed by assignment speech evaluation.
by the end grammarian report by CP Lau, ACB, ALB. “Ah” Counter report by EK Yeo, CC, CL. Timer report by myself Ooi Yee.

Lastly, GE Chelsea provided her reports based on her observation. She gave some constructive suggestions on how to improve the club and member's speech. She is really a sweetie and smiley girl, she even never fade away her smile when giving the evaluation.

Finally, this was the last exciting session before the meeting adjourned. Mr. President Ron, CC presented the awards to the following winners and announced upcoming events adjourned the meeting with his closing address.

For your information, we saw 3 standing ovationon this special day. For, Chitirra, Mandy chan and Dr. Thilla. Cheers to all!

Last but not least, he also welcomes guests to give some feedback on overall the conduct of the meeting.Ron officially adjourned the meeting by knocking the gavel on the lectern.

VPPR- Thanks for reading, Hope you have enjoyed reading it. I thank to our beloved writer Toastmaster Ooi Yee, Yap and the Team.

Regards,
Manish Jha.

MEETING #363 - National Day

A fifth Tuesday meeting is hard to come by, and it is falling on the eve of a nationwide holiday, the Independence Day on 31 August.

That’s right, our Fifth Tuesday meeting was on 30th Aug. To celebrate and indulge the meaning of Independence Day, we set out meeting theme as the “National Day”, with the word of the day “Equanimity”, which carries the meaning of having a calm mental state after a shock or disappointment.

Our Honorable General Evaluator is NJ Singam, DTM, who is currently serving as District 102’s District Editor and District Tamil Coordinator.

The meeting started with our energetic Assistant Sergeant-At-Arms, Manish Jha, CC, took over the stage and called the meeting to order. He led us through the recital of Toastmasters promise.

At this point, the President, Ron Yeap, CC was invited to deliver his President’s Address. He was delighted with the theme of the day, and also reminded all the audience not to forget the struggle of the nation’s forefathers in fighting for the nation’s independence, while enjoying the freedom under this sovereignty today.

The crowd was then invited to introduce themselves to the audience. Not only they resounded together with the theme of the day, they also used the word of the day “Equanimity” profusely.

Among the visiting Toastmasters joining us, were CC, Tan Jiao Han from Universiti Malaya TMC; CC, ALB Eddie Lai, from Air Products TMC; CC, Foong Sook Hwa from IJM TMC; and also CC, Sivadas from Friendship TMC. We also have Sima, a Doctoral student from Universiti Malaya joining us as the first-timer in Toastmasters meeting.

The Table Topic Session was taken over by Table TopicsTM Master, Manish Jha. We saw pro-active members and guests races to take part in the Table TopicsTM session from different Toastmasters club.

Coming to the Prepared Speeches Session, we got 3 speakers came prepared to present to us. Our first speaker is DTM Ken Chan, delivering from the Competent Communication manual, Project #6, with speech title Negotiate with Power. He assured everyone that everyone can negotiate with power with the principle which I can still remember and understood.

  • Put yourself in their shoes — it’s crucial to understand what’s important to the other side
  • Remember your own value — you are at the table for a reason
  • Ask questions — you’ll get valuable insight into their motivations and interest

The next speaker is CC, Ron Yeap, attempting the Advanced Communication manual, with the project of Delivering Bad News. His speech title was “Changing of Meeting Venue”. He was informing the audience the Toastmasters meeting venue of our club will be relocated, and left the audience with shocking faces, only to find out that this is just a mock-speech and not real news.

The third speaker is Kevin Khoo, CC, also attempting from Advanced Communication manual, with the project of Motivational Speech. He left us with a simple and memorable acronym called U.B.E.R., which stands for Unlocking, Breaking, Empowering followed by Realization. Kevin creatively curated a few small stories that lead the audience to understand the key points.

Then it came to the feast time to fill up our hungry stomach with PJ’s best nasi lemak, among other refreshments. The short break has served as a good networking session for members and guests to catch up with each other. As you know us the Toastmasters, are synonymous to enthusiastic people.

After the break, the meeting session started with the Evaluation Session. The session was led by the respectable senior Toastmaster, DTM NJ Singam. He first explained nicely the purpose and benefits of evaluation. I would say he was excellent.

The first evaluator was the Table TopicsTM Evaluator, ACG, ALB Julia Leong. Her detailed and encouraging remarks on the performance of the Table TopicsTM speakers were noteworthy.

Next comes to ACG K.L. Loh evaluating DTM Ken Chan on his CC#6 speech. It was so co-incidentally that K.L Loh also evaluated Ken’s CC#6 speech long time ago. This gave Loh a good opportunity to make comparison of Ken’s progress along the year. However, in the perspective of CC#6, he hoped to see more vocal variety being input into his speech.

For Hj. Hashim who were evaluating CC, Ron Yeap. Hashim commented that
Although this is a bad news delivery, but Ron did not show much of empathy, or sympathy, on his facial expression, he thought that would make the speech more impactful.

Evaluating CC, Kevin Khoo’s speech was ACB, ALB CP Lau. According to CP, Kevin’s speech was well crafted and had successfully uplifted the spirit of the audience.

At the end of the evaluation, the technical evaluators presented their reports diligently. They are, ACG, ALB Dr. Thilla for the grammar mistakes we made, as well as excellence use of the English language; speech crutches was picked up by ACB, Serena Kong as ‘Ah’ Counter; and capturing the time taken by every speaker and role players, CC, Sivadas.

DTM, Singam acknowledged that Money Mastery-KL has come a long way with excellence record. The meeting also met his satisfaction level in general. He urged MM-KL TMC to add in the Speaker’s Introduction before the speaker took the stage. This could help to edify the speaker as well as preparing the audience for the speaker’s topic.

The meeting came to the highlight when the best performers of the meeting were to be announced and appreciated.
A special was waiting for our long standing member past president Victor wan for being in Money Mastery -KL Toastmasters club for incredibly more than 8 years.

As a Toastmasters tradition we also asked our guest to say something about the meeting. How did you find this meeting.

The meeting ended nearly 10pm, which the members and guests were leaving with a smile on their face, for a fulfilling meeting they had had, and a relax holiday for the next day.

Sincerely,
Thanks to the Team,
Manish Jha, CC

Meeting #362: The Sound of Music

It was a pleasant evening when the Toastmasters fraternity came from their respective work to have an exciting meeting in our Toastmasters club. This was the meeting number 362. So far in last 14 years we have done three hundred and sixty one meetings successfully in our club. It’s an achievement for a club has we move 362.

The most handsome man, in the eyes of writer, is our Vice President of Education (VPE) Competent Communicator(CC), Kevin Khoo  who that day came up with exciting theme of the day “The sound of Music”. Sounds interesting, right? yes, The theme itself scintillated us at first (The sound of music), and later you can’t even imagine how all the speakers also mesmerized the audience with their scintillating speeches. You may be thinking why I’m using this word scintillating too many times. If you had been to our meeting you would have understood. In every Toastmasters meeting we learn a new word and add it to, our vocabulary. So this said evening we learnt a new word scintillates which means, “to emit sparks”. Now you too learnt it right. he he he.
Great is the power of the spoken word, when it is spoken in truth, by one whose life supports what he says.-Dr. Ralph C. Smedley, 1878-1965, Toastmasters Founder.

You too can develop a scintillating personality when you join a Toastmasters club. One of the way is just to practice, practice and practice your speaking skills. It will turn your speaking ability to an awesome piece as you display your scintillating skills.

Order, order!! Good evening the lovely ladies and ordinary gentlemen, welcome to meeting number 362.   Could you imagine who could say this? At this point of time when it was exactly 7:15pm. Any guess?

It was none other than our Sergeant at Arms (SAA) of this meeting; Our SAA was our VPE Kevin Khoo who has brought the meeting to order.  As usual after introducing the house rules, the SAA led the ritual of reciting Toastmaster’s promises. He then passed the control of the meeting to the President competent communicator (CC) Ron Yeap.

He came up with 100,000 ringgits smile and energy to set the stage on fire and make the atmosphere more comfortable for everyone to participate and speak in best of their ability. He called Grammarian who some call as a Language Evaluator to introduce the word of the day , which is “scintillate” which I introduced to you at the very beginning of my writing. Hahaha. Mr. President is not late to introduce this word but this is the way to conduct during the meeting. The grammarian as he introduces the word he also give some examples how to use this word correctly.  The President encouraged everyone to use this word as many times as possible throughout the meeting.  He also encouraged, speaking about the theme of the day which is “The sound of Music”. My friends, the sound is really important in the music as we all know, similarly sound is also important in our speaking as well as in our life, make sure you are producing right sound at right time, at right place, and source of the sound is correct. Otherwise, it may embarrass or make you smile when you fart without reason to anyone or with no one

In Toastmasters meeting we have three sections. First is the impromptu speeches also called table topic, 2nd prepared speeches and 3rd Evaluation of the all the speeches.  Why you need to know this because every section has its own purpose and benefits and followed by a lot of fun. You know, this day we had brand new member who came straight from the showroom of Money Mastery –KL Toastmasters club and took the courage to run the meeting from the beginning to the end. I hope some of you have already understood who I’m talking about, Yes Toastmaster of the Evening; she is none other than Toastmaster, Chitirra. She was not only brilliant but she was fabulous hosting the meeting. Well done!!

What I was doing??? Hehehe. I was table topic master offering table topic speakers to speak on the topic prepared by me. I did a lot of research to prepare these topics; I know you are excited to know what those topics could be? I would not tell you all but yes something like “How is music related to your life?” You can try to speak on it, make sure speak only for 2 mins and 30 seconds. Otherwise you will be disqualified. Hahaha. And I can proudly tell you the speakers spoke very well, which really gave us different perspective to think and see our life plays music in every moments through different emotions.

Toastmaster of the evening Toastmaster Chitirra moved the meeting to the next section and called first speaker of the day Toastmaster, Foo Fung Jiun to present his speech from competent communication manual speech number five  your body speaks, with speech title –“A heart stopping event.

My friend, Foo Fung Jiun a health care professional by his profession. He came with very relevant speech to educate us, in short how to save a life when someone getting attack in front of you. He shared an experience how he was able to save a life but being a health care professional he has helped many people.  He came up with a Teddy bear to demonstrate how to act on the spot and show us exactly how we should act on the spur of the moment. He is a kind of speaker who spoke from the bottom of the heart. This evening we learnt really a new skill how to save life in a moment when going through heart attack. His speech scintillated us to take action when called upon to do so. Well done!!

Now, was the turn of 2nd speaker of the evening Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Ken Chan. He was doing his speech number six from competent communication manual on Vocal variety- With his speech title “You can’t please everybody”: -
How many of you think that you can? If you can, you are only a lucky person. It looks like a proverb but its real experience. You can’t please everyone in life. You can’t even please yourself many times. DTM, Ken Chan, shared his personal story you can’t please everybody. However, you can choose to be pleased while looking only good things in everyone and good things in every situation. Well done.

Our 3rd speaker of the day was anxious before he comes to the stage.

Toastmaster of the Evening Toastmaster, Chitirra called our last speaker Chong Ji Sheng. He was doing his 8th speech from the competent communication manual which is,“get comfortable with the visual aids”. His speech title- “It’s about time”. Now I remember I was also one of the speech evaluators this evening. I was playing a double role this evening. We learn sometime how to work extra when it is required in Toastmasters.
ChongJi Sheng came up with a very recent story happened in his life. He has recently completed his pre university and going to join his college. He shared how he had a party in his house to celebrate with his friends.  He said everyone that he really enjoyed the evening also they had a lot of fun. Time flew so fast that he did not realize that the event came to an end.  Often happens especially when we are having a good time, isn’t it right? J It was very hard to leave the old friends and say goodbye to them. Usually it happens with everyone.  He was sad but he was also excited for his new life in college. We all have to move on for the better as times moves on.

After all the scintillating speeches ourGeneral Evaluator(GE) Advance Communicator Bronze (ACB), Advance leader Bronze(ALB) Lee Tong Fong  who was quietly observing and enjoying the whole meeting took control of the stage and started with evaluation process.  He explained the evaluation is the breakfast for the champion because if you eat King Size notorious breakfast you can reach anywhere and at any level in the process of learning. He called all the evaluators in the order. The first to share was our Table Topic evaluator ACB, Serena Kong- Oh My God , she was brilliant evaluating all the four  table topic speakers. She highlighted the strength and weakness and followed by the points to improve. Well done.

Your evaluation was most valuable to us. Thank you. Panel of evaluators also did their presentation very well, EK Yeo, CC, CL;Hj Hashim DTM, and of course myself , ha,ha, ha ha. I should say we all the evaluators did a good job. As an evaluator you have to highlight the strength and weakness and give the points of improvements. This enables one to be better in the next speech.  There are many methods to do it, one popular method is the sandwich method in which one encourages share the point of improvement and encourage or exhort the speaker.  Hahaha. Finally our GE presented his report in detail on the overall conduct of the meeting which really helps a club do much better. This is how we learn things from each other.

It was time to embrace the reality and appreciate the best performers.

After appreciation President Ron Yeap took the control and acknowledged everyone’s effort including TME Chitirra to run the meeting smoothly on time. With this He made his closing remarks and called meeting to adjourn, wished everyone good night and waved his hand saying “Thank you and drive home safe”. It was indeed a scintillating evening with lovely and awesome people. Hope to see you in our next Toastmasters meeting.

Sincerely,
